CHAPTER XXXIX

The Potts' of Davies County, Kentucky.

A family of Potts' was settled in Davies County, Kentucky, in the early part of the nineteenth century, but the time of coming to America or of settlement in Kentucky, seems to be unknown. There is a tradition that the family is descended from one Solomon Q. Potts, of Northampton, England, who is said to have had sons, Ezekiel E., Christopher A., and Washington A. The two latter are said to have been Commanders of British war ships, and to have been buried at Northampton. Ezekiel is alleged to have been the father or ancestor of Richard F. Potts.


FIRST GENERATION

1. Richard F. POTTS was born on Jul 4 1776. He is said to have been born July 4, 1776, and was a resident of Kentucky, near Owensboro, Davies County, it is supposed. His wfe was Betsey Cummings. He died at about 70 years of age, and his wife at about 96 years. TMP page 416

He was married to Betsey CUMMINGS. Richard F. POTTS and Betsey CUMMINGS had the following children:

SECOND GENERATION

3. William Baty POTTS was born on Jun 9 1814 in Davies County, Kentucky. He died between 1884 and 6 in Litchfield, Montgomery Co., Illinois. He removed to Illinois, first to Macoupin County, and in 1856 to Montgomery County, where he purchased seveal thousand acres of land. In the latter part of his life, he engaged in mercantile business, at Litchfield, Illinois. TMP page 418

He was married to Rhoad Ann RICHARDS. Rhoad Ann RICHARDS was born in Morgan Co., Illinois. William Baty POTTS and Rhoad Ann RICHARDS had the following children:

7. Richard Daniel POTTS was born on Sep 28 1835 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He resided in Raymond, Montgomery Co., Illinois. He is a wealthy farmer. He was married to Mary D. LEYERLEY (daughter of Aaron LEYERLEY) in Montgomery Co., Illinois. Richard Daniel POTTS and Mary D. LEYERLEY had the following children:

16 ii. Pearl POTTS was born in Montgomery Co., Illinois.


8. Edmond J. POTTS was born on May 24 1837 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He settled in Montgomery County. He made an overland trip to California in 1864. Members of the Christian Church. Residence: Litchfield, Mongtomery County, Illinois. TMP page 418

He was married to Agnes Ann ALLEN (daughter of Elder Robert ALLEN and Elizabeth ROLLIN) in 1858 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., Missouri. Edmond J. POTTS and Agnes Ann ALLEN had the following children:

19 iii. Daniel Walter POTTS was born on Apr 23 1870 in Litchfield, Montgomery Co., Illinois. Teacher iin E. St. Louis, Illinois

20 iv. Edmond Joseph POTTS was born on Sep 9 1873 in Litchfield, Montgomery Co., Illinois. He was a musician.

21 v. Effie POTTS was born on Apr 12 1875 in Litchfield, Montgomery Co., Illinois.

22 vi. Estella POTTS was born on Oct 27 1887 in Litchfield, Montgomery Co., Illinois.


9. Sarah POTTS was born in Macoupin County, Illinois. She was married to Robert NASH. Sarah POTTS and Robert NASH had the following children:

10. Joseph W. POTTS was born on Sep 19 1841 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He removed to Montgomery County, Illinois, where he engaged in farming until 1872, when he engaged in mercantile business at Raymond. In 1881, he established "The Raymond Independent," which he still continues to publish. TMP page 419

He was married to Mary MILLER. Joseph W. POTTS and Mary MILLER had the following children:

11. Samuel J. POTTS was born on Apr 8 1845 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He resided in Raymond, Montgomery Co., Illinois. He was married to Mary HEMPHILL. Samuel J. POTTS and Mary HEMPHILL had the following children:

He was married to Gertrude Eliza DEWEY in 1894 in East St. Louis, St. Clair Co., Illinois. Asbury Albert POTTS and Gertrude Eliza DEWEY had the following children:
