The Funeral of Christ Weist Occures at LaRue This morning (see above article from the Wyandot Chief August 23, 1900).

The passing away of Christopher Weist, whose funeral took place this forenoon at his home north of LaRue, and mention of whose death was made in the Star, Thursday, removes a familiar character from Marion County.

The deceased was in his seventy-sixth year and drove a stage coach through Marion fifty years ago. At the time Little Sandusky was a city compared with Marion. His route was from Sandusky City, on the lake, to Delaware. For a number of years he resided in Marion, but of late years has spent his time in and about LaRue and Upper Sandusky, and a part of the time at Little Sandusky. Later he returned to this city and lived with his niece, Mrs. John Seitz.

Mr. Weist was at one time quite wealthy. He had twelve children and to each of these he gave a farm. His wife died twelve years ago and since that time he has always lived at some hotel.

Thanks so much for the picture pages you sent. When Donovan's mother saw them, it really brought a flood of memories about her grandfather, John Weist, who lived with them when she was growning up.

The house at Genoa was a new house that John Weist built for Will and Manta when they moved back from Nebraska and in later years, he came to line with them.

She remembers him as a very loving old man. When they got home from school, they always had to tell him everything that happened, everything they learned that day. In High School, they studied German and he went over their lessons with them every night -- she thinks he pretty well did their homework for them, and they got good grade. She can't remember any German now.

The girls fought over who got to clean his room and make his bed because he always gave that one a quarter. They prized that quarter.

He always took one of them to the cemetery with him to visit Sarah's grave and would tell them stories about the family but she doesn't remember any of them now.

That he always dressed very well, that he had black silk suits and looked so nice. That he probably had quite a bit of money at one time but it was about gone before he died, that there wasn't much to leave his family.

PAST AND PRESENT OF WYANDOT COUNTY, 1913 JOHN WIEST, who bases his success in agricultural work upon hard work and a practical knowledge of farming, is the owner of a fine tract of one hundred and nineteen acres in Pitt township and is recognized as a factor in the agricultural growth of that section. He was born in Richland township, Marion county, March 24, 1855, and is a son of Christopher and Mary (Wilt) Wiest, the former of whom was born in Germany in 1822 and the latter in Stark county, Ohio, in 1831.

John Wiest's educational opportunites were limited to three months' attendance in the district schools of Little Sandusky and he is therefore largely self-educated, his knowledge coming as the result of observation, reading and study in later life. From the age of fifteen until he was twenty he aided in the operation of the home farm and then in 1875 purchased land on his own account, buying eighty acres which he sold in 1908. In that year he purchased one hundred and nineteen acres in Pitt township and has since engaged in farming and stock-raising upon the property, both branches of his business being extremely profitable. He raises oats, corn, wheat and hay and keeps three hundred and fifty Duroc Jersey hogs, three hundred sheep, sixty head of cattle and fifteen horses, his animals commanding a high price and a ready sale in the local markets. Mr. Wiest has improved his farm with a modern residence, good barns and outbuildings and has installed all of the conveniences and accessories neccessary in the operation of a model agricultural enterprise.

On January 14, 1875, in Upper Sandusky, Mr. Wiest was united in marriage to Miss Emma Swinehart, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Swinehart, the former a farmer in Pitt township. Mr and Mrs. Wiest are the parents of three children: Daisy M., who married Edward Hornby, a farmer in Pitt township, by whom she has one daughter, Ima; Alvador, a farmer in Pitt township. who married Miss Wyna Mauser, by whom he has one child, Mozella; and Maud C., who married Clarence roberts, a farmer of Pitt township, by whom she has two daughters, Katherine and Helen. Mr. Wiest;s fraternal affiliations are with the Masonic order, the Odd Fellows, the Knights of Pythias and the Maccabees. He is a member of the Wyandot Mutual Protective Association, and his religious views are in accord with the doctrines of the Methodist Church. Politically he affiliates with the democratic party and has served his fellow citizens as supervisor of Pitt township for five years and as treasurer of the school board for thirteen years. His influence is ever on the side of right and progress and his labors have therefore been a force in the county's advancement.

Ltr from R.C. Manhart

Dad and mother had just bought a farm 1921 not a good one; and not a bad one either. After mother died each of the 3 oldest children - First, Marie and her husband Marion; then Russell and his wife Minnie; then Lewis and his wife Villa tried "running the farm - paying the debts and keeping the family of 5 kids together. Nothing proved successsful! Dad turned the farm back to the former owner and we 5 children were "farmed out to relatives." Harry was diagnosed as having TB and was sent to Mt. Vernon (I personally doubt if he ever had TB)! I stayed with Lewis a couple of months and then went to live with Russell and Minnie (from that time I called it my home!

Opal stayed with Marie for awhile - Then she, "kept housse", for Dad awhile - Then she went back to Marie's when Dad remarried.

Ralph stayed with the Sam Hughes until he married.

The wedding picture speaks for itself. We still treasure the gray silk dress she wore, with the fringe at the bottom, and cabbage rose at the shoulder, along with his silk shirt. Silk was definitely "in" at that time. Her school girl picture was probably about 1913, and the baby picture was probably a Christening picture. The stree scene was probalby Kenton, Ohio, with the meat and barber pole in the background. The picture of Margie and son Don was also taken in Kenton, Ohio.
