FIRST GENERATION

Graves of Hugh V. Smith and Sarah Yeazel

1. Hugh V SMITH farmer was born on Jan 30 1796 in Clark Co., Virginia. He was buried in May 1855 in Deal Cemetery, Salt Rock Twp., Marion Co., Ohio. He died on May 18 1855 in Salt Rock Twp., Marion Co., Ohio. The family tradition says that he was born in Virginia but in the 1860 US Census he gave his birth place as Pennsylvania. Harley Smith believes that Hugh V. Smith's fathers name was John, this has not been verified. That will be a mystery for the future to solve. Hugh V. had at least 3 brothers, David, Robert and William. David came to Marion Co. in 1830, but removed further west to Lima Township, LaGrange County, Indiana. Hugh mentions in his diary visiting with David in Indiana.

LAGRANGE COUNTY, INDIANA HISTORY. Among the pioneers of LaGrange County none are more entitled to note than David Smith and his family, who settled on 360 acres in Lima Township in 1833, They have been prominent since in the history of the county. One of the sons John Smith, is subject of this section. He is widely known as a successful farmer, and has given particular attention to the improvement of live stock. It is owing to his efforts and of others like him that such great strides have been made in the live stock interests of the county. Mr. Smith was born in Clark County, Ohio Oct 24, 1823. He was married to Sarah R. Parker in 1855, who died in 1857, leaving one child, Sarah A. In 1862 he was married to Serence Craig, and they have two children Mary J. and Charles C.

EXCERPTS FROM MARION COUNTY COURT RECORDS.

John Seaburn son of William and Nancy A. Rawles Seaburn. Hugh V. Smith was appointed guardian of Nancy Rawles in Marion County, Ohio.

Herbert H. Smith of Lima Township, son of Hugh (son of David Smith) and Nancy Smith born Sept 14, 1861.

Hugh V. Smith visited his brother at least once in the 1840's, as recorded in his diary. David Smith married Mary Gossard August 22, 1819 in Clark County, Ohio.

William Smith married Hugh V's wife's sister Catharina Yeazel, December 27, 1828 in Clark County, Ohio. He also came to Marion County but didn't remain.

Robert Smith also came to Marion County and did own land in the county, but finally left.

Hugh V. lived for sometime in Clark County, but it is not known if his parents ever lived in Clark County. It is possible in that so many of his brothers lived in the county. Little is known of Hugh V. during this period of his life. The date of his arrival in Marion County range from 1820 to 1823. It is known for sure that he was in Salt Rock township by 1823. He purchased his first property from his brother-in-law William Yeazel September 7, 1823, Section 29 Township 4 Range 14, 80 acres. His father-in-law had made several purchases of real estate in western Marion County prior to this time. It is possible that Hugh V. was on the property developing it for his father-in-law. Hugh V. continued to add to this orginal purchase through out his life time. There are several recorded patients from U.S. Government in his name. Most of the holdings were in Grand township and Salt Rock township, but at the time of his death he did own approximatily 600 acres in Claridon township. This property was later owned by Alexander Sims and Fanny Smith Sims. The property was sold at the time Alex and Fannie removed to Iowa. Sarah "Sally" Yeazel(PEDIGREE) was born February 24, 1798 in Hampshire County, Virginia now West Virginia the daughter of Abrahma Yeazel and Mary Curl, natives of Virginia. Abraham was born Apr 29, 1774 in Virginia and died Jan 2, 1832 in Moorefield Townhship, Clark County, Ohio. Mary Curl was born October 30, 1776 in Virginia and died Sep. 22, 1828 in Moorefield Township. She was the daughter of William Curl and Sarah "Sally" Brown. She was the daughter of Thomas Brown and Mary Ball. The Yeazel Family has a family tree showing Mary Ball's parents as William Ball born 1676 in Millenbeck, Lancaster County, Virginia. This connection would make Mary Ball Brown a first cousin of George Washington. The Will of Abraham Yeazel is interesting in that it doesn't leave any inheritance to Sarah Yeazel Smith, but does appoint Hugh V. Smith the executor. Abraham Yeazel and Mary Curl were natives of Virginia coming to Clinton County, Ohio in 1801. They moved further north into Clark County in January 1810, locating in the southeastern part of Moorefield Township. Their son David was born June 1804 in Yellow Springs, Green County, Ohio. The next four children where born at Todd's Fork in Clinton County. Abraham must have either felt that Hugh V. Smith was well enough off or that he had already provided for Sarah 'Sally" Smith's Family. He trusted Hugh V. making him the executor of the estate. Hugh V. Smith was a prominent resident of Salt Rock township, being an early pioneer of the area. His name appears many times in land sales. He took an active part in political life of the community. The second election was held in Marion County October 11, 1825, the resolutes for the commissioners race: Talman rausse 294; Zach Welsh 32; Hugh V. Hugh V. Olney, the subject of this sketch, lived on the farm with his parents until twenty-three years of age, when he engaged in the clothing business, in partnership with his Uncle LeRoy J. Olney, at Ottawa, Putnam County, Ohio, for three years; he then moved to Marion, Ohio, and was employed at carpentering until 1877, and then re-entered the clothing trade at Van Wert, continuing therein until 1888, when he sold out and carried on a boot and shoe house until 1891, when he disposed of this business and has since devoted his attention to his landed interests in Pleasant, Washington, Hoaglin, and Union Townships, Van Wert County. He is a director in, and treasurer of the Van Wert Hedge Fence Company, and also owns the fine business block on Main Street now occupied by Davies & Jones, Clothing Merchants, and Jones & Tudor, hardware dealers. The marriage of Mr. Olney took place in Marion County, Ohio, September 26, 1871, to Miss. Sarah O. Harvey, daughter of O.H. Fraternally he is a Knigh Templar Mason, a member of the Royal Arcanum, and of the National Union. He is a man of fine personal appearance, an is very popular with the people of Van Wert and adjoining counties, and his business talents are far above the ordinary, rendering him capable of filling any position in life, public or otherwise, which he may choose to accept.

He was married to Sarah O. HARVEY (daughter of David Henderson HARVEY and Edith RICH ) on Sep 26 1871 in Marion, Marion Co., Ohio. Sarah O. HARVEY was born in 1854 in Ohio. She died on Oct 30 1930 in Van Wert, Van Wert Co., Ohio. She was buried on Nov 1 1930 in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, Van Wert Co., Ohio. Hugh Vance OLNEY and Sarah O. HARVEY had the following children:

+44 i. Clara OLNEY.

+45 ii. Edith OLNEY.

+46 iii. Myrtle OLNEY.

47 iv. David Kahn OLNEY was born on Jul 2 1881 in Van Wert, Van Wert Co., Ohio. He died on Nov 5 1905 in Van Wert, Van Wert Co., Ohio. He was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, Van Wert Co., Ohio. HISTORY OF VAN WERT COUNTY, OHIO: DAVID K. OLNEY. In the death of David K. Olney, which occurred at the beautiful home of his parents, on South Washington Street, Van Wert, this city lost one of its most promising young business men and one whose personal friends were limited only by those who had come within the circle of his acquaintance. David K. Olney was born in Van Wert, Ohio July 2, 188l, and passed away on November 5, 1905, at the early age of 24 years. He was a beloved member of a family of four children born to his parents, Hugh V. and Sarah O. (Harvey) Olney. His liberal education was pursued in the schools of his native city and completed at Ohio Wesleyan University, at Delaware. At Van Wert, on February 1, 1905, he entered into business life as a member of the well known firm of Feldner, Olney and Richards, a house which stands very high in commercial circles. The few months which intervened prior to his sudden and fatal illness proved his business capacity and convinced his friends that, like his father, he would soon have taken a very prominent place in the affairs of the city. He displayed keen business judgement, but always recognized the underlying principles of commercial life-the honesty and integrity which form the foundation upon which all reputable business is built-and, at the same time, possessed those qualities which made him friends wherever he went. Mr. Olney was popoular, and deservedly so. He was kind, courteous, generous, forgiving, was enthusiastically in favor of those things which stood for the right, and was ever ready to oppose dishonesty or any kind of meanness. Those who knew him best acknowledged his personnel magnatiam-a faculty which drew men to him and retained their confidence, admiration and affection. He was unselfish in his desires, and the most loyal of friends. Freternally he was a active Mason. Preparing to take his part in public affairs, he had identified himself with the Republican Party, and with intelligence had studied the questions of the hour. He was a worlthy member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. As age comes on apace, with its dimmed vision and halting step, life fortunately loses many of its allurments, but sad it is to see the passing of one to whom life's treasures were only being fairly revealed. Allthough he had gone so early from the visible life, he so lived his few years that the deepest grief of those left behind can be softened by many tender recollections.

MOTHER'S DAY SENTIMENT SENT TO NEW HARMONY

Here is a letter from Corporal W.W.Barr that is so brim full of the spirit of "Mother's Day" that the one particular mother, Mrs. M.S.Barr, No. 1232 "C" Avenue East was willing other mothers of the county who have boys at the front might have a share of her treat. It is one of the nicest of letters, inspired by the occasion of "Mother's Day." Somewhere in France;

Dear Mother:- "Mother's Day" what beautiful sentiment. Somewhere in France, your boy is thinking of you wishing he could put his arms around you and tell you everything. This day is set aside for you only, but how unnecessary it is. Only we soldiers know how every day is Mother's Day for us. Not one passes that I do not think of you and wish I had lived my life more for you who gave it, and made it possible for me to be one of the many who are fighting for our country and you. There's a spot in my heart, that no Colleen may own. There's a depth to our soul never fanthomed, or known. There's a place in our memory my life that you fill. No other can take it, no one ever will. Sure I love the dear silver that shines in your hair and the brow that's all furrowed and wrinkled with care. I love the dear fingers, so toil worn for me, God bless you, and keep you, "Mother Machree." My favorite song and one we fellows sing almost every day. Many times I have heard some fellow say "I only wish I had a mother." There is one great good that will come from this war, if no other. It will make us all more appreciative of "Mother." I know you are proud of me. Far more so, maybe than you should be, and if I can only "be the fellow that my mother thinks I am," I will never be ashamed of my record. Don't worry about me, I am well cared for, Health is fine and we know the game well enough to take care of ourselves. So some day we will all come back and the proudest moment of our home coming will be when mother welcomes us. We will know that welcome is for us, and not what we stand for. God speed the day, the sincere wish of your son Corp. W.W.Bar, C.Bat. 119th.

He was married to Elizabeth SINDELIR (daughter of Frank SINDELIR and Katherine PAVEK ) on Jun 26 1923 in Warren, Marshall Co., Minnesota. Elizabeth SINDELIR was born on Nov 19 1898 in Zic, Bohemia. She died in Aug 1986 in Minnesota. In 1980 she was living in Thief River Falls, Minn. Zip code at time of death 56701.

SINDELIR FAMILY

Frank Sindelir Sr. married Katherine Pavek in Bohemia, where they lived in the village of Zic. Frank was a forest ranger and a musician. Katherine was a wife and mother to their 8 children. They had seven natural children and adopted another one. Katherine often took in little ones to care for when she had a new boy of her own. Frank Sr. died in Bohemia around 1899/1900. Katherine and all 8 children immigrated to the US during the early 1900's. They came to Olivia, Minnesota, really to Bechyn, where there were already some relatives living. As the children grew up and married, they settled and began their own families. This is a brief outline of those 8 children and their children. John, the oldest of the children, was born August 15, 1874. He was the first to immigrate, coming in 1900. He married Antonia Senkyr in 1901, and they had 8 children; Marie, Godfrey, Frank, John, Bessie, Agnes, Helen and Henry. Another daughter died in infancy. They farmed around Olivia until about 1920, when they moved up north to Lake of the Woods County. John passed away on July 3, 1960, and Antonia on August 18, 1974. Frank was born August 17, 1876, and was married to Albania Vonderka while still living in Bohemia. When they immigrated in 1906, they already had one son, Joseph. They had 7 more children after they came to America; Rose, Frank, Mary, Antone, Emma, Albie and Stanley. Frank and family also moved north to Lake of the Woods County, but it was approximately 1914. They were farmers there until their passing; Frank on July 6, 1964 and Albina on January 27, 1967. Anton, the third child, was born June 4, 1882. He immigrated late in the year of 1903. He married Josephine Budik in 1908. They farmed by Olivia most of their lives nd were the parents of 8 children; Clara, Emily, Raymond, Margaret, Anthony, Theodore, Georgianne, and Robert. Upon retiring from farming, they moved to Danube, Minn. were Anton died on December 12, 1959 and Josephine on July 28, 1967. Agnes, the oldest daughter, was born June 21, 1884. She immigrated early in 1903 with her mother and sisters. Agnes married to John Svitak in 1908, and they were the parents of four sons; Edward, John, Albert and Anton. They were also farmers, first in North Dakota, and later in northern Minnesota. Agnes passed away February 8, 1971, and John on June 1, 1974. Henry was born in 1889, and came to America with Frank and his family in 1906. He didn't stay in Minnesota very long, moving to Chicago about 1920. There he was married to a lady named Rose, and they lived in the Chicago area until he died....probably in 1937. The information on the branch of the family is very sketchy, and it is believed that Henry had no children. Joseph was the adopted son of Frank and Katherine. He was probably born in Austria on October 23, 1890, but was raised from the age of two by the Sindelir's. He also immigrated with Frank and family in 1906. Joseph married Marie Lipold in 1912, and they had six children; Joseph Jr., Stanley, Helen, Elsie, Milo and Leo. They lived several places in Minnesota, eventually settling in Beaver Falls, where they lived at the time of their deaths, Mary on October 7, 1964, and Joseph on July 8, 1967. Mary also immigrated with her mother and sistersin 1903. She was probably born in 1891, so was 12 years old when she arrived in America. She married Anton Buresh and they had 3 children; Mary, Emil and Anton Jr. They lived at Olivia first, and later in Meadowslands; Minnesota, farming and doing odd jobs. Anton died in 1925 and Mary in 1932. Elizabeth, the baby of the family, was born November 19, 1898. She came over with her mother and sisters in 1903. She was married to Maynard Schafer when she had her first two children, Pearl and Ralph. She later married Wilsie Wilbur Barr, who adopted the 2 children, and Elizabeth and Bill Barr had three more children; Charles, Philip and Betty Jane. They lived at Viking, Minn. and at Alexandria, Minn. Bill Barr died January 31, 1956, and Elizabeth now (1980) lives at Thief River Falls.
