Biographical Notes on John Dehaven, Philidelphia/Montgomery Co, c 1716-1812. John Dehaven was son of Peter and Sidonia (Levering) Dehaven. He was born, probably in Skippack Township in what is now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, about 1716. On August 17 1743 at First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia he was married to Elizabeth Potts who was born in 1724. She was probably a daughter of Thomas and Rachel (James) Potts, whose children Lydia, Elizabeth and Jonathon are named on the Potts family chart. Elizabeth married "out of meeting" and her line is not followed. This would make Elizabeth a granddaughter of David and Alice (Croasdale) Potts.

On December 1, 1742, Peter Indehoffen and Elizabeth his wife sold 44 acres of the 100 acre tract which Edward Indehoffen bought in 1706 from Richard Morris, and which Edward and wife Elizabeth had, in turn, granted to said to said Peter, this sale was made to John Indehoffen. The other 56 acres of this tract had been deeded to Peter's eldest son, Edward, on May 1, 1742. In 1763 Edward sold his portion to Jacob Shetz; in 1777 Shetz sold it to Joseph Stamper, at which time it was found to contain 58 instead of 56 acres. In June 1784 Joseph Stamper sold the same tract to John Dehaven. Thus John Dehaven became the owner of the entire 100 acre tract purchased by Evert (Edward) from Richard Morris At his death he held the 44 acre portion and 12 acres adjoining the plantation, on the other side of the Skippack Road.

County maps as late as 1848 show the residence of David Dehaven, Jr. on this tract. The house and garden referred to by John in his will may still be seen at Blue Bell, Whitpain Township. Elizabeth died on 19 October 1808 at the age of 84 years and John died on 15 January 1812 at the age of 98 years. b. 1713? [Note: John is listed in his father's will after Modlin b. 1716 and before Peter II b. 1722 so this may be an error in this source}.

iv. Anneke IN DEN HOFFEN was born about 1694 in Skippack Twp., Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania.

The ship of Friends landed at Upland now Chester, Pennsylvania, 1682. 692. George CHANDLER was born on April 8, 1633 in Wilcot, Wiltshire, England. He died on December 13, 1687 in At Sea. A Record of the Descendants of George and Jane Chandler (Who emigrated to Pennsylvania From Wiltshire, England, in 1687) with a Pedigree of the Chandlers of Oare, Wiltshire by Chandler Family Reunion Committee 1937 In the year 1686 John and George Chandler of Wiltshire removed to the Province of Pennsylvania. The date of their departure from England is fixed by a bond, dated 31st March, 1686, given by John Chandler of Oare in the Parish of Wilcot and George Chandler of Great Hodge, both in the county of Wilts, to Robert Pyle of Stanton Bernard; by which the said John and George Chandler are jointly bounden for the repayment of a certain sum of money advanced them by the said Robert Pyle for the purposes of their intended voyage and venture. The said money was to be collected in Pennsylvania by Robert Pyle, jnr., and Nicholas Pyle (sons of the said Robert), who were duly empowered for that purpose by letters of attorney to them directed, and afterwards recorded in Pennsylvania. The English home of John and George Chandler is further certainly identified by the will of the above George Chandler, then of the township of Chichester, in the county of Chester and province of Pennsylvania, dated 13th of 11th month 1699 (O. S.) (13 January, 1700, N.S.) wherein and whereby (smong other things) the testator doth give and bequeath unto one Richard Edmunds "of Worr" (Oare) in Wiltshire "in Old England," a sum of money due to the testator by George Chandler of Pennsylvania (testator's nephew), "to be disposed of as he (Richard Edmunds) shall think or see needful."

The absence of vital records of the Chandler Family is due to the fact that the earlier generations of the family were not Friends. The earliest record found, in the registers of Concord Monthly Meeting, of a member of the Meeting named Chandler, is in 1724. In England, the Family were members of the Protestant Episcopal Church; so it is likely that after settling in Chichester, they attended St. Paul's Church, of Chester; St. Martin's, of Marcus Hook; or St. John's, of Concord - but early records of all these congregations - if records were kept - are lost. He was married to Jane.

693. Jane was born about 1635 in Wilcot, Wiltshire, England.

George CHANDLER and Jane had the following children:

i. John CHANDLER was born on February 13, 1669 in Wiltshire, England. He died in Died in Childhood.

vi. Thomas CHANDLER was born on April 2, 1681 in Wiltshire, England. He died in 1761. Thomas Chandler settled on the Brandywine, in Birmingham Township, and married Mary Mankin. In his will proved in 1761, he provides for his wife Mary; leaves his plantation to Thomas, son of his brother William; and makes bequests to his sister Ann Jones, to several children of his brothers George and William, and to other relatives; and makes nephew Thomas Chandler, (son of brother William) residuary legatee and executor. Thomas Chandler was a member of the Provincial Legislature of Pennsylvania for twenty years. He was a man of whom many interesting things can be written. He died in 1761, leaving no children.

vii. Charity CHANDLER was born on April 1, 1683 in Pewsey, Wiltshire, England. She is mentioned as daughter-in-law Charity Chandler, in the will of her step-father William Hawkes, in 1693/94; but probably died young, as no further record of her appears.

viii. Ann CHANDLER was born about 1685 in Pewsey, Wiltshire, England. She died on August 10, 1758 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

They fled to Co. Antrim, Ireland, but later settled on the southwest shore of Ardmore, Co. Waterford. This where her (Ann Gregg Dixon) d. in 1672. He lost his inheritance in Glen Barony on the Coast of Co. Antrim after May 1653. Ann had three brothers (that we know of) John, George and Richard, all b. Ireland. The Gregg name was originally MacGregor. The MacGregors were persecuted by the Stuarts, and at some point, history states that next to the Jews, they were the most persecuted of races ever known. This proscription or imposed restrictions, was set down by James VI. This ban meant that no MacGregor could be baptized, marry or bury their dead. The ban meant all legal agreements could be broken with complete impunity, and it was in perfect order to murder any MacGregor in cold blood for the mere fun of it. This prompted disruption among the clan of Rob Roy, the famous Robin Hood of his time. Scotland and Northern Ireland supported Prince Charles but he was defeated at the battle of Dunbar, and with his defeat, everyone that supported the Prince was in jeopardy. Small wonder that our ancestors were forced to leave their inheritance and flee to Ireland and later to America. Ann left for America in 1682 with her father and family, with William Penn's immigration and landed in Pa. Ann's father was our first Gregg ancestor in America and was a Quaker. He first settled on a 200 acre plantation and built a log cabin, but later moved to Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware. Here he had 400 acres surveyed to him in 1685. He d.
