1. John Cooper SECKEL was born on Jan 13 1792 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.. He died on Oct 13 1868 in Crawford County, Ohio. He was buried in Likens Cemetery, Marion, Marion County, Ohio. John Cooper Seckel (1792-1868)

John Cooper Seckel was born in the City of Philadelphia, Penn., in 1792, the son of Heinrich and Sophia (Cooper) Seckel. He was first married to Elizabeth Farrell in 1811. Very little is known about his first wife Elizabeth except that she was born in 1794 and died in 1818. They were the parents of three children - Sophia Cooper., born February 12, 1812. Henry, born 1813: and Joshua Cooper, born September 29, 1815.

He then married Mary A. (Mears) of English ancestry in Pennsylvania; came to Crawford County, Ohio, in 1836, locating near Winchester. In 1844 he moved to Marion County, where they resided until death. Both John Cooper and Mary are interned in Likens Chapel Cemetery. They were parents of seven children, - John W., born November 10, 1828; Ann Elizabeth., born September 20, 1830; Catherine., born December 7, 1833; Thomas M., born August 21, 1834; Columbus T., born January 21, 1837; Washington., born July 13, 1939; David, born March 8, 1842.

He was married to Mary Ann Polly MEARS in Pennsylvania. Mary Ann Polly MEARS was born on Aug 17 1808 in Pennsylvania. She died on Oct 13 1880 in Marion County Ohio. She was buried in Likens Cemetery, Marion, Marion County, Ohio. #3238 (1808-1880) Listed on 1880 Census for Marion County, Claridon Township as living with her son Washington, age 72 years.

5. Thomas M. SECKEL was born on Aug 21 1834 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.. He died on Aug 16 1892 in Claridon Twn., Ohio. #1920 (1834-1902) Thomas M. Seckel was born in the City of Philadelphia, Pa., August 21, 1834, the son of John Cooper and Mary A. (Mears) Seckel, who came to Crawford County, Ohio, in 1839, locating near Winchester. In 1844 they moved to Marion County, the father dying October 13, 1868, and the mother October 13, 1881. Our subject, having acquired a limited education, made his father's home his place of abode until his marriage, which took place April 9, 1863, to Miss Phoebe Russell, a daughter of Elijah and Sarah (Cook) Russell, natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio respectively. They were joined in marriage, at a very early day, in Marion County, and resided here many years. He was well known and owned a farm of 200 acres. Thomas and Phoebe Seckel are the parents of six children - George A., born January 12, 1864; Charlotte E., January 12, 1866; John C., November 4, 1867; Navada E., December 30, 1869; Estella L., July 23, 1872; and Austin M., January 13, 1874. Our subject resided upon a farm of 120 acres, valued at $60 per acre. He is an industrious citizen and a member of the Democratic party.

He was married to Phoebe RUSSELL on Apr 19 1863 in Marion County, Ohio. Phoebe RUSSELL1 was born about 1838. She died in 1939.

Two Seckel Brothers purchased grain sacks. Columbus Seckel's sacks were with an " i " in his last name. He left as was and changed his name to Sickel. Thus he differed from his brothers and sisters.

(Mears) Seckel, of German and English ancestry respectively. They were married in Pennsylvania; came to Crawford County, Ohio in 1835, locating near Winchester, and to Marion County in 1843-1844, where they resided until death. Washington, having obtained a liberal education, continued with his father until his marriage, which took place September 17, 1868, to Miss Sophia Corwin, a daughter of Stephen and Margaret (Crawford) Corwin. He was born in Washington County, Penn., May 14, 1813, and she was born In Jefferson County, Ohio, June 25, 1812, and died February 18, 1873. Mr. and Mrs. Seckel had a family of seven children, six surviving - Emory E., born September 22, 1869; James O., January 22, 1871; Mertie A., April 26, 1872; Maggie, November 17, 1875; Santford, July 8, 1877 and Joseph M., October 22, 1880. An infant daughter is dead. Their mother Sophia (Corwin) was born November 4, 1846. Mr. S. is the owner of seventy-nine acres of valuable land, worth $75.00 per acre. He is an industrious farmer, and politically a Democrat.

Sophia Cooper Seckel was born in the City of Philadelphia, Pa., on February 12, 1812, the daughter of John Cooper Seckel and Elizabeth (Ferrell) Seckel. She married Nate Foos and they were the parents five children. Jane., born 1839; John., born 1840; George W., born 1842; Sophia., born 1855; Joshua., born 1862. She may have stayed in the Philadelphia area when her father John Cooper and step-mother, Mary Ann (Mears) moved to Crawford County, Ohio.

Note: Sophia was the sister of Joshua Cooper Seckel by his father John Cooper Seckel's first marriage.

10. Henry SECKEL was born on Jun 10 1813 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.. He died on Feb 6 1900 in Missouri. #1916 (1813-1900). Henry was born in the City of Philadelphia, Pa., June 10, 1813, the son of John Cooper and Elizabeth (Farrell) Seckel. May have moved to Crawford County, Ohio in 1839 when his father and step-mother did but this is not clear. He married Agnes Wilson who was born in Virginia on October 3, 1822. They were the parents of thirteen children - John born 1840, d. March 17, 1919 - remained single, George., born 1843; Lucinda., born 1846, Frances A., born 1848, Joshua or Joseph., born 1849, Martha., born 1850, Marion., born 1853, Clay., born 1854, Elizabeth (Mary)., born 1855, Susan., born 1857, Cora (Carrie); Raymond; Joseph Montgomery., born 1864. Henry had moved to Missouri about 6 miles west of Savannah, and no information has been obtained except he was living there in 1883, 1884 and 1885. He kept slaves, fleeing to Caledonia at time of Civil War, working at shoemaker trade. He returned to Missouri when war was over, and died there October 1, 1903. He was listed on the 1850 Missouri Census as Henry Sickel age 35 - Cordwiner.

Ohio. #1917 Joshua Cooper Seckel (1815-1878) Joshua Cooper Seckel was born in Philadelphia, Penn., September 29, 1815, the son of John Cooper Seckel and Elizabeth (Ferrell) Seckel. He married Elizabeth Mears and they settled in Latimberville, (Kirkpatrick) Ohio in 1839. They were the parents of five children - Nathan; Laurana; Andrew., born November 17, 1841, John Thomas., born 1842; Henry., born 1846.

The 1850 Census listed under Marion County, Scott Township shows him as Joshua Sickel age 30 - Blacksmith.

Elizabeth (Mears) Seckel died in 1876. His second wife was Margaret Trayer about whom we have no other information. *NOTE*( according to inscription on gravestones, Elizabeth died January 24, 1878 which was only 14 days after he died, so he could not have had a second wife) He died January 10, 1878 and is interned at Kirkpatrick Cemetery. He left an estate of $40,000.

*George Ulsh lives on a tier of turnpike lands; next in order was where Joshua Sechel (Seckel) lives; next where Capt. Knowles and the Walton farm is...ect.

*Lived next to George Ulsh on Columbus Sandusky Pike, was next tier.

THE MARION STAR: MONDAY DECEMBER 9, 1963 Mrs. Wealtha S. Seckel, 83, of Marion RR 1 died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday at home. Ill two months, she had been seriously ill a week. Her husband, James O., died Dec. 3, 1958. Born July 12, 1880, in Marion County, she was a daughter of John and Olive Cluff Smith. She was a member of the Kirkpatrick Liberty Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ruthilla Windom of Marion RR 1 and Mrs. Marjorie Gulliford of Marion RR 7; a son, Earl of Caledonia RR 2; five grandchildren; four brothers, George T. Smith of Waldo RR 1, David of Marion RR 6, Fred of 691 Davids St. and Benjamin H. of Marion RR 5, and two sisters, Mrs. Marquerite Myers of Darius St. and Mrs. Harley Loudenslager of 223 E. Columbia St. Two sons, a brother and four sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Timson Allen Funeral Home at Caledonia. Rev. Mack D. Boggs will officiate. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

She was married to James O. SECKEL (son of Washington SECKEL and Sophia CORWIN) on May 30 1900 in Marion, Marion Co., Ohio

Andrew received a common school education, married, October 4, 1862, Mary Hutchison, a daughter of Rev. J. H. Hutchison of the Indiana Methodist Episcopal Church. Eleven children have been born to them - Charles H., born 1863, Nathan., born 1864, Bertha., born 1866, Cora., born 1868, James H., born 1870, John T., born 1873, Katie L., born 1876, Minnie., born 1878, Alpheus., born 1879, Lo Burnett., born 1882, Clyde M., born 1884.

Andrew was severely wounded in his seventeenth year by an ax being struck into his spine in consequence of which he was an invalid many months. He received from his father's estate 115 acres of good land. He also had eighteen acres near Caldonia and was quite an extensive grain raiser. In 1881, from sixty acres he obtained a yield of 987 bushels of wheat, and in 1882, from the same number of acres, 760 bushels.

Dear Cousins:

The trees are getting more color each day. Truly the paint brush is in Gods hands. The days are warm in the 70's. This weekend we plan to meet Warren and Frances in the mountains near Gatlinburg, Tenn. Hoope the color will be at its peak.

We talked to an old neighbor, Grover Foos, age 92, very sharp. He described Duffer as a large, slightly bent over using a cane. he had a neighbor lady helping his wife with the house and while she was working there, he went over and took her money. He started using the bills which were old ones and folks became suspicious. He ws found guilty and received prison sentence. he said (Duffer said) " they will never take me to prison" and they didn't. He drilled a hole in his can and in a vile he had poison. He took it on the way and that was the end of Duffer.

That was what I remembered as a kid also. I have a cousin who lived on the same steet, we talked to him Sunday. He said the same, but he sort-of-thought he got to Columbus Pen, (not real sure). If we find any more information, we'll send it along.

They were the parents of seven children - Charles E., born 1924, Mildred V., born 1925, Herbert J., born 1928, Rollie J. Jr.., born 1930, Fredrick L., born 1933, Arthur., born 1936 and Rita D., born 1938. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and was also a paperhanger and painter, working with his brother Paul.

In his late years he lived with his daughter Mildred and spent winters either in Tallahassee, Fla. with his son Herb or in Ft. Myers, Fla. fishing, until he went to live at the V.A. Home in Dayton, Ohio where he died August 16, 1972. He is interned at East Akron Cemetery next to Violet who died on her daughter Mildred's fifteenth birthday, February 5, 1940.

He chalks up the death of Robert Kennedy and the recently uncovered plot to kill President-elect Richard Nixon as "ethnic" - the ill feeling of the Arab world toward anyone who espouses the cause of Israel.

Seckel recalls driving one day with President Roosevelt from Hyde Park, N.Y. to his mother's New York apartment. The president wanted to go over some papers belonging to his mother who had recently died. "My god," he says, "we had about 20 percent of the police force of New York City involved (in the president's protection), and I got out of his car and there were a thousand people hanging out windows all over the neighborhood. I said to one of the Secret Service men then if anyone wanted to take a pot shot there wasn't much that could be done.

Seckel was on duty in the White House when Mrs. Roosevelt got word the president had died of a massive stroke in Warm Springs, Ga. Years later he and his wife were headed out of Washington one day for their retreat on the Severn River in Maryland, when he walked into a grocery store and heard the news of the death of President Kennedy. He turned around and went back to the White House. "I didn't see him for three days," Polly Seckel says.

Seckel, a native of Marion, Ohio, first came in contact with the presidency at the age of 10 when "they brought Warren Harding home to be buried." He wheedled himself into the good graces of a wire service photographer who paid him $10 a day to haul his camera gear around Marion.

In looking back, Seckel has a pet theory he thinks history - some day - will bear out. One day he took from the hand of President Harry Truman a handwritten letter addressed to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. That would have been in about 1947. And as Seckel took the letter to a classified pouch to be delivered to Eisenhower, then supreme commander of Nato, he said to himself that this was Truman's invitation to Eisenhower to accept the Democratic presidential nomination. It was speculation that made good sense at the time, for both Democrats and Republicans were vying for the hand of the American "hero" of World War II.

"He turned him down, and that's why Truman never forgave him. Never liked him again," theorizes Seckel, swearing that one day it will all come out. Of the five first ladies under whom he served, he says, Elenor Roosevelt cared least for the White House, its furniture or the food that went on it tables. She was too immersed in causes.

"Bess Truman was the best housekeeper," he recalls. "When they (the Trumans) moved in there, she wanted to cook the president's food. But when she realized what she was into, she really ran that place - just as if it wre her own."



When he retired, Seckel got a letter from Lyndon Johnson. "Dear Capt. Seckel,: the president wrote him. "As you begin your first week of retirement, I want to express to you my warm personal appreciation and gratitude for the service you have rendered to your county by your faithful performance of duty.."

But after 24 years of watching president come and go, Seckel still hasn't figured out why anyone on earth wants the job. "Threatening letters and nuts trying to climb the fence every day," he says shaking his head.
