CHAPTER - XXXVII

A Potts Family of Charleston, South Carolina.

The data at hand concerning this family is very meager and largely traditionary. This family is here designated as of Charleston, because it was the first place of settlement on coming to America. The facts here printed were furnished by Dr. Samuel T. Potts, of Augusta, Georgia, whose father died when he was an infant. The family records seem to have been lost or destroyed.


FIRST GENERATION

1. Alexander POTTS was born in Scotland. He married Miss. Charlotte McKentire, Scotland, and after the birth of their first child, emigrated to America and settled at Charleston, South Carolina, about the time, they removed to the vicinity of Petersburg, Virginia. The sons William T. and Robert were sent to London, Englandm where they were educated.. Alexander Potts died suddenly when about his stables. TMP page 414

He was married to Charlotte MCKENTIRE. Alexander POTTS and Charlotte MCKENTIRE had the following children:

2 i. James POTTS was born in Great Britain.

SECOND GENERATION

3. William Thornell POTTS died in 1840. He was born at Charleston, South Carolina. He was educated in London, England, and upon his return to America, entered into business speculations. In his venture he went to New Orleans and there invested his capital in a cargo of cotton, intending to sail for England, and after disposing of his cargo to settle in London. Just previous to sailing, the vessel took fire and the entire outfit and cargo were destroyed. After this misfortune, he returned to Petersburg. In 1834, he went to South Carolina, where he met and married Anna Simmons, and settled in Horry District. He engaged in teaching and attained considerable eminence in his profession. In 1840, the family removed to Wilmington, North Carolina, where Mr. Potts and his three eldest children died of yellow fever in the same year. TMP page 415

He was married to Anna SIMMONS. William Thornell POTTS and Anna SIMMONS had the following children:

7 i. Amanda Melvina Fitzallen Frances DeLeslie POTTS died in 1840.

8 ii. Rachel Ulricha Florilla Belvidera Desdemona Galloway POTTS.

9 iii. Rosetta Isabella Ivanoah POTTS died in 1840.

+10 iv. Wilomelia Elvira Lenora POTTS.

+11 v. Dr. Samuel T. POTTS.


THIRD GENERATION

10. Wilomelia Elvira Lenora POTTS. Residence: Newbern, North Carolina. She was married to THOMPSON. Wilomelia Elvira Lenora POTTS and THOMPSON had the following children:

12 i. Elizabeth Ann THOMPSON.

13 ii. John THOMPSON.

14 iii. James THOMPSON.

15 iv. William THOMPSON.

16 v. Lenora THOMPSON.

17 vi. Mary THOMPSON.

18 vii. Samuel THOMPSON.


11. Dr. Samuel T. POTTS was born about 1839. He studied medicine and spent much time in travel. Owing to a physical affection, he was compelled to relinquish the practice of medicine and engaged in mercantile pursuits at Augusta, Georgia. The compiler is indebted to Dr. Potts for the information contained in this Chapter. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth CARROW. Sarah Elizabeth CARROW was born in Craven County, North Carolina. Dr. Samuel T. POTTS and Sarah Elizabeth CARROW had the following children:

19 i. Samuel Thomas POTTS was born in 1867. Thomas was the thrid son and Three sons died in infancy.
