CHAPTER XXXVI

Dr. Anthony Potts, and his Family.

The compiler has some fragmentary account of a family who took their origin in Northumberland County, England. They are in all probability descended from the same parent stock, as those of Chapter XXXV. The information at hand is embodied in letters from several members of the family, which contain general information, but are very defective as to individual names. The following is a summary of the facts at hand.


FIRST GENERATION

1. Anthony POTTS. TMP page 412 Whose wife's name was Hannah, lived in Herdlaw, Parish of Elsden, in the County Northumberland, England. He had a son.

Anthony POTTS had the following children:

SECOND GENERATION

2. William POTTS.

William POTTS had the following children:

THIRD GENERATION

3. William POTTS. He was a surgeon and apothecary, at New Castle-on-Tyne, County Northumberland, England. He was twice married. Two sons by the first marriage are said to have left England, one going to North America and the other to South America. (Possibly an error for Nroth and South Carolina). By the second wife, Mary Brown, he had a son. TMP page 412

He was married to Mary BROWN. William POTTS and Mary BROWN had the following children:

+4 i. Anthony POTTS was born about 1759 in New Castle-on-Tyne, England. She died in 1852 in Green Co., Ohio.


FOURTH GENERATION

4. t Anthony POTTS was born in 1759 in New Castle-on-Tyne, England. He died in 1852 in Green Co., Ohio. He was a physician, and married Ann Brown, daughter of James Brown, Brewer, etc., of Wyham, England, about 1790. They emigrated to the United States about 1794 and settled first, either in Virginia or New York. After a few years they removed to Fayette County, Ohio, where they remained until 1820, when they removed to Illinois and settled in Green County. He raised three sons and three daughters. He was married to Ann BROWN (daughter of James BROWN). t Anthony POTTS and Ann BROWN had the following children:

FIFTH GENERATION

5. William POTTS was born in 1791 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He died in 1862. He married in Ohio, and settled in Green County, Ilinois. He was married to Mrs POTTS. Mrs POTTS died in 1872. William POTTS and Mrs POTTS had the following children:

7 i. POTTS was born in 1820. She died in 1837.

8 ii. POTTS was born in 1823.

9 iii. J POTTS. Residence. Jacksonville, Illinois

10 iv. POTTS. aged 3 years

11 v. POTTS.

12 vi. POTTS was born in 1832.

13 vii. POTTS was born in 1835.


6. POTTS. Their were three other daughters. She was married to SMITH. POTTS and SMITH had the following children:

14 i. Henry SMITH.

15 ii. Frank SMITH.

16 iii. Samuel SMITH.

17 iv. Iowa SMITH.

18 v. Lycurgus SMITH.
