(POTTS)


FIRST GENERATION

1. Thomas POTTS. (NOTE: A tradition in the family alleges tht Thomas Potts had a brother John Potts, who came to America with him, and settling either in Pennsylvania or Virginia, was lost sight of.) The tradition alleges, came from Northumberland County, England, possbibly about 1720 to 1730, and settled on the Pedee River, in Georgetown District, South Carolina. Whether he brought a wife with him or not is not know. His descendants were clanish, and when occasion demanded, removed in a body t another locality. About 1825, they left the rice district, on account of its unhealthfulness, and removed to the oak and hickory lands of Chester District, and again, in 1836, to Winston County, Mississippi. Prior to the Civil War, this family were quite wealthy, but lost nearly all their property during the conflict. Since then they have scattered to various places, many settling in Texas. TMP page 408

SECOND GENERATION

2. Capt. Thomas POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. He served in the Revolutionary War. He entered the Army as a private and rose to a Captaincy. She was a cousin of Abigail Smith, who married President John Adams, and a niece of that William Smith, who on account of his large landed possessions was called Landgrave Smith. TMP page 409

He was married to Miss. THOMPSON. Capt. Thomas POTTS and Miss. THOMPSON had the following children:

6 i. Lieut. Thomas POTTS. He was unmarried. Served under Gen. Marion in the Revolutionary War.

He was married to Rebecca SMITH. Capt. Thomas POTTS and Rebecca SMITH had the following children:

+9 ii. Hannah POTTS.

10 iii. Thomas Hughes POTTS MD was born on Dec 16 1788 in Georgetown District, South Carolina. He died on Aug 19 1826 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. He was a physician and settled at Statesville, North Carolina, wher he died unmarried in 1826. He was buried in the Presbyterian churchyard at Statesville, where a stone marks his grave and bears this inscription, (Thomas Hughes Potts M. D. A native of Willliamsburg District, North Carolina, Born 16th Dec. 1788; Died in this place, 19th Aug. 1826. A tribute of respect by his bereaved relatives.) TMP page 410


3. Margaret POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. She was married to Hugh SWINTON. Margaret POTTS and Hugh SWINTON had the following children:

4. Ann POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. She was married to Moses MILLER. Ann POTTS and Moses MILLER had the following children:

7. William POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. They lived and died in South Carolina. TMP page 409 He was married to Martha NELSON. William POTTS and Martha NELSON had the following children:

8. John POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. He was married to Mary SMITH. Mary SMITH was born in 1794. She died in 1869. She was buried in Episcopal Churchyard, Georgetown, South Carolina.


9. Hannah POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. She died in Winston County, Mississippi. She was married to Stephen MILLER (son of Moses MILLER and Ann POTTS). Stephen MILLER was born in 1769 in Georgetown District, South Carolina. Hannah POTTS and Stephen MILLER had the following children:

21 i. Capt. Thomas Potts MILLER was born in 1804 in Georgetown District, South Carolina. In 1876, he was living, unmarried, at Louisville, Mississippi. TMP page 410

13. Stephen MILLER was born in 1769 in Georgetown District, South Carolina. He was married to Hannah POTTS (daughter of Capt. Thomas POTTS and Rebecca SMITH). Hannah POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. She died in Winston County, Mississippi. Stephen MILLER and Hannah POTTS had the following children:

15. Capt. Samuel Thomas POTTS was born in Georgetown District, South Carolina. He died in Winston County, Mississippi. He was married to Margaret SWINTON. Capt. Samuel Thomas POTTS and Margaret SWINTON had the following children:
