CHAPTER XXXIV

The Potts' of King George County, Virginia.

A family of Potts' of good standing is seated in King George County, Virginia. So far as the compiler has any information has come to hand concerning antecedents or ancestry. The information which follows was furnished, mainly, by Dr. Richard Potts, of Edge Hill, King George County.

FIRST GENERATION

1. Richard POTTS was born in 1753. He died in 1823 in King George County, Virginia. He was a farmer of King George County, and a man of means, being a slaveholder. He married a widow Barrett. He died about 1823, leaving a will which was probated August 7th of that year. TMP page 405

Richard POTTS had the following children:

3 ii. George C. POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia. unmarried

SECOND GENERATION

2. Richard POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia. He had several children, three of whom were daughters. The names of two sons, only, have been furnished. TMP page 403 He was married to WILSON. Richard POTTS and WILSON had the following children:

+6 i. Morton W. POTTS.

7 ii. Richard POTTS.


4. Hezekiah POTTS was born in 1782 in King George County, Virginia. He died in 1847. He taught school until the death of his father, when he engaged in farming, and owned a good number of salves. He was a soldier of the War of 1812, and was once nominated by his party as a candidate for a Member of the House of Delegates, failing of election by only a few votes. TMP page 406

He was married to Ann M. PRICE. Ann M. PRICE died in 1865 in King George County, Virginia. Hezekiah POTTS and Ann M. PRICE had the following children:

10 iii. Thornton POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia.

11 iv. Alexander POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia.

+12 v. Elizabeth POTTS.

+13 vi. Ann M POTTS.

+14 vii. Frances Y. POTTS.

15 viii. Sarah B. POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia.

+16 ix. Julia C. POTTS.


5. POTTS was married to JOHNSON.


THIRD GENERATION

6. Morton W. POTTS was married to Margaret POTTS. Morton W. POTTS and Margaret POTTS had the following children:

+18 ii. Burton V. POTTS.


8. Dr. Richard POTTS was born on Sep 12 1818 in King George County, Virginia. He was married to Elizabeth COAKLEY in 1847. Elizabeth COAKLEY died in 1873. Dr. Richard POTTS and Elizabeth COAKLEY had the following children:

19 i. Melissa POTTS died before 1901.

20 ii. Richard POTTS resided in Gatesville, Texas.

21 iii. Thornton C. POTTS resided in Gatesville, Texas. married

22 iv. William A. POTTS.

23 v. Robert O. POTTS was born in 1866.

+24 vi. Nannie POTTS.

+25 vii. Fannie POTTS.

+26 viii. Florence POTTS.

+27 ix. Lula POTTS.

28 x. Mabel POTTS.

+29 xi. Sallie POTTS.

He was married to Mary MARSHALL in 1874.


9. Hezekiah POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia. he had seven children. He was married to Ann P. BALL.


12. Elizabeth POTTS had three children. She was married to Thomas J. MINOR.


13. Ann M POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia. She was married to Dr. T. K. PRICE.


14. Frances Y. POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia. She was married to William T. BEVAN. Frances Y. POTTS and William T. BEVAN had the following children:

30 i. Thomas H. BEVAN.

+31 ii. Jennie BEVAN.


16. Julia C. POTTS was born in King George County, Virginia. Five daughters She was married to James E. JONES.


FOURTH GENERATION

17. R. B. POTTS was married to Nannie POTTS (daughter of Dr. Richard POTTS and Elizabeth COAKLEY).


18. Burton V. POTTS was married to Fannie POTTS (daughter of Dr. Richard POTTS and Elizabeth COAKLEY).


24. Nannie POTTS was married to R. B. POTTS (son of Morton W. POTTS and Margaret POTTS).


25. Fannie POTTS was married to Burton V. POTTS (son of Morton W. POTTS and Margaret POTTS).


26. Florence POTTS was married to Thomas A. QUESENBURY.


27. Lula POTTS was married to Powell COAKLEY.


29. Sallie POTTS was married to Chapman PRICE.


31. Jennie BEVAN was married to Isadore RAYNOR.
