JONATHAN POTTS, OF SOUTH CAROLINA


FIRST GENERATION

1. Jonathan POTTS died before 1850. He removed from Lincoln County, North Carolina, to Greenville District, South Carolina, and settled on the Salinda River. Of his antecedents, there is no certain information. One tradition seems to indicate that he came from England. As some of the descendants of James Potts, of Mecklenburg County, settled in Lincoln County, he may possibly have been of that family. TMP page 397

He was married to Elizabeth STEVENSEN. Jonathan POTTS and Elizabeth STEVENSEN had the following children:

2. James POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. He was married to Margaret HIGHTOUR.


3. John POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. He was married to Martha GRIFFIN. John POTTS and Martha GRIFFIN had the following children:

4. Hugh POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. He married Mary Griffin, sister of his brother John's wife.

He was married to Mary GRIFFIN. Hugh POTTS and Mary GRIFFIN had the following children:

5. Levi POTTS died on Sep 9 1877. He was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. He was married to Permella MOORE. Levi POTTS and Permella MOORE had the following children:

31 ii. Ira D. POTTS resided in Piedmont, Greenville District, South Carolina.

7. Col. Erasmus F. POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. He died in Alton, Madison County, Illinois. He was a machinist and ginwrightman, but also engaged in merchandising and hotel keeping. He at different times lived at Columbus, Lexington, Pontotoc and Holly Springs, Mississippi. He accumulated great wealth and was a great landed proprietor. At the breaking out of the Civil War, he owned ninety-six sections of land, embracing Marshall, Benton and Tippah Counties, Mississippi, and his annual taxes then amounted to $19,500. He was a useful man in his community and generous all in need. During the Civil War, he was taken prisoner and confined at Alton, Illinois, where he died at the age of sixty-two years. His widow died February 1870. Three children died young. The post-office in Marshall County, called Potts Camp, was named in his honor. TMP page 398

He was married to Elizabeth BROWNLEE. Elizabeth BROWNLEE died in Feb 1870. Col. Erasmus F. POTTS and Elizabeth BROWNLEE had the following children:

8. Young POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. He settled in Cherokee County, Georgia. He ha several children, but the name of only one has been given. He was married to Nancy GRIFFIN. Young POTTS and Nancy GRIFFIN had the following children:

9. Basdel POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. He had three sons and three daughter. After his death his widow and children removed to Kentucky. TMP pge 399

He was married to Cherry LYNCH. Basdel POTTS and Cherry LYNCH had the following children:

10. Elizabeth POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. She was married to Allen GRIFFIN.


11. Jane POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. She was married to Murrell MASSER.


12. Mary POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. She was married to Edward GRIFFIN. Mary POTTS and Edward GRIFFIN had the following children:

13. Cynthia POTTS was born in Lincoln Co., South Carolina. She was married to John D. BARKER. Cynthia POTTS and John D. BARKER had the following children:

THIRD GENERATION

32. Tira R. POTTS was born in 1844. He is a farmer and resides at Riverview, Greenville District, South Carolina. He and his brother Ira D., and their families, are the only Potts' remaining in that District. TMP page 399

34. Ferdinand POTTS. He was married and settled on Potts Creek, about 18 miles southeast from Holly Springs, Mississippi. TMP page 399

35. James POTTS. He continued to live at the old homestead until his mother's death in 1870, when he removed to Holly Springs, where he continued until his death. His wife's name has not been given. TMP page 400
