John Potts of Iredell County, North Carolina


FIRST GENERATION

1. John POTTS died in Jasper Co., Georgia. John is said to have been a brother of Moses Potts, and to have removed with him from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. He later removed to Georgia and died in Jasper County. His wife's name has not been furnished. James M. Potts, a grandson of Moses Potts, says he often heard his father speak of his "Aunt Ann Potts," but does not know whether she was a sister or sister-in-law of Moses Potts. There may have been other children beside those named.

John POTTS had the following children:

SECOND GENERATION

2. James POTTS was born in 1747. He died on Sep 17 1845. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He married, raised a family and died Sep 16, 1845, in his ninty-eighth year.

James POTTS had the following children:

6 i. Stephen POTTS.

8 iii. William POTTS died in Monroe County, Georgia.

9 iv. James POTTS.

10 v. Jane POTTS.


4. Stephen POTTS. Is probably the same who, his descendants say, removed from Pennsylvania to Oglethorpe County, Georgia. (NOTE: A tradition in the family alleges that he was born in 1725.) When he was about forty years old, he is said to have married Margaret Potts, a cousin. Perhaps she was the daughter of Henry Potts, (See No. 5, page 376). He is described as a man of fine physique and great activity. He acquired quite a large estate and was fond of gaming and horse-racing. He was thrown from his horse and killed about the year 1818. He and his wife were buried side by side in Bowling Green District, Oglethorpe County. No tombstone now remain. TMP page 374

He was married to Margaret POTTS. Stephen POTTS and Margaret POTTS had the following children:

11 i. Henry POTTS. Removed to Lauderdale County, Mississippi

13 iii. James POTTS. Settled in Heard County, Georgia

+14 iv. Margaret POTTS.


THIRD GENERATION

7. Moses POTTS. He married and settled in Troup County, Georgia, where many of his descendants still reside.

Moses POTTS had the following children:

+15 i. William POTTS.

16 ii. Frank M. POTTS. Living in Atlanta a few years ago (1901).


12. Stephen POTTS died in Centerville, Bibb County, Alabama. He removed from Georgia and settled at Centerville, Bibb County, Alabama, where he engaged in farmiing and merchandising, and accumulated quite a fortune.

He was married to TILLERY. TILLERY died in Livingston, Alabama. Stephen POTTS and TILLERY had the following children:

14. Margaret POTTS.

She was married to John MCWHORTER. John MCWHORTER was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.


FOURTH GENERATION

15. William POTTS.

William POTTS had the following children:

18 i. L. C. POTTS. Living at Long Cane, Troup County, Georgia in 1884.


17. Henry POTTS was born in 1800. He died on Feb 22 1843.

He was married to Nancy E. MIMS in 1827/28 in Perry County, Alabama. Nancy E. MIMS died in Apr 1882 in Mobile, Alabama. Henry POTTS and Nancy E. MIMS had the following children:



+19 i. Stephen M. POTTS.


FIFTH GENERATION

19. Stephen M. POTTS was born on Dec 22 1830 in Alabama. He died on Aug 20 1885. They lived in Alabama until after the Civil War, when they removed to Mansfield, Desota Parish, Louisiana. Mr. Potts was much interested in family history, and collected considerable data concerning his ancestors, but ill health prevented him from accomplishing what he desired.

He was married to Susan T. STURDIVANT on Apr 24 1850 in Alabama. Stephen M. POTTS and Susan T. STURDIVANT had the following children:

20 i. Henry POTTS was born in 1851 in Alabama.

21 ii. Stephen POTTS was born in 1855 in Alabama.

22 iii. Lillian E. POTTS was born in 1858 in Alabama.

23 iv. Paul POTTS was born in 1859 in Alabama.

24 v. Etta E. POTTS was born in 1862 in Alabama.
