A Potts Family from County Monaghan, Ireland.


FIRST GENERATION

1. George POTTS was born in County Monaghan, Ireland. George of County Monaghan, Ireland, was the ancestor of a family who settled in Pennsylvania in 1798, some of whoe descendants attained to considerable prominence. The information furnished concerning this family has been very meager and incomplete. Tradition alleges that in the time of Cromwell, two gentlemen named Potts, Sergeants in the Army, were sent over to Ireland, from England, and subsequently settled there and were the ancestors of Potts' of County Monaghan. Three sons of George Potts emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1798. TMP page 423

George POTTS had the following children:

4 iii. James POTTS. Settled in Butler Co., Pa. No further account.


SECOND GENERATION

2. John POTTS was born in 1749 in County Monaghan, Ireland. He died on Feb 3 1834 in Butler Co., Pennsylvania. He came to Pennsylvania, in 1798, and settled at Butler, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1814-15, he represented Butler County in the State Legislature. TMP page 423

He was married to Jane KARNS in 1803. John POTTS and Jane KARNS had the following children:

5 i. Sarah POTTS was born in Butler Co., Pennsylvania.

6 ii. Gen. George POTTS was born in 1807 in Butler Co., Pennsylvania. He died in 1872. He died. He was pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia.

7 iii. John POTTS.

+8 iv. Judge James POTTS.

9 v. Wilson K. POTTS.

10 vi. Margaret POTTS.


3. Rev. George C. POTTS died in 1838. He was born in County Monaghan, Ireland. He was pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia.

Rev. George C. POTTS had the following children:

11 i. Rev. George POTTS D.D. was born on Mar 15 1802 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died on Sep 15 1864. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, in 1819, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1823. He was pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Natchez, Mississippi, for twelve years. In 1836, he accepted a call to New York. TMP page 424

12 ii. Silas Engles POTTS was born in 1805 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died on Dec 10 1839 in Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1827, with a degree of M. D. He settled in Mississippi, where he died.

13 iii. Ann POTTS. unmarried


THIRD GENERATION

8. Judge James POTTS was born on Aug 31 1810 in Butler Co., Pennsylvania. He attended Jefferson College 1829 to 1831, and later studied law. He settled at Johnstown, Pa., in 1839, and was President Judge of Cambria County 1871 to 1873. He held other official postions. They were members of the Presbyterian Church and occupied a high social position. They had serven children - four sons and three daughters. TMP page 424

He was married to Margaret Jane KARNS.
