1027. Earl Otto MITTEN was born on Nov 18 1892 in Gibbs, Adair Co., Missouri. He died on Sep 28 1990 in Ransom, Ness Co., Kansas. He was buried on Oct 1 1990 in Utica Cemetery, Utica, Kansas. Earl's middle name was originally "Otterbein". He did not like it and changed it to "Otto". When he died mother used Otterbein in his obituary and on his death certificate. Earl was a farmer. The family were members of the Christian Church. He was a veteran of World War I.

Military Service of Earl O. Mitten in World War I In an interview with my father on february 9, 1988, he told me that he had registered for the draft at Vici, Dewey County, Oklahoma, where his parents lived at the time. He later went to Vancouver, B.C. Canada, where an aunt and uncle lived, to take a job. While in Canada he was called to report for duty and took the train down to Bellingham, Washington. His outfit was 32nd Div. of 125th Infantry. He said he was in the Muesse Argon Offensive and was in France when the Armistice was signed. At some time during his service he was in San Diego, California, but later said he was discharged somewhere in Washington State. He could not remember exactly what his length of time in the service was. NOTE: After dad's deth we found his discharge papers which indicated he was discharged at Camp Lewis, Washington. While he was in service or maybe shortly before, his parents had also moved to Canada. A few months ago Dad gave me a box of old post cards, mostly picture post cards some of which had been written by his parents from Vici, Oklahoma to him in Vancouver. Others were cards written by him to his parents while in service. A review of these cards with dates or post marks puts together the following story: 1. A card written May 27, 1918 from Bellingham, Washington, said he would leave for Camp Lewis next day at 12:20 p.m.

2. A post card postmarked June 1, 918 at Tcoma, Washington, to his parents at Vici, Oklahoma indicates tat he was at Ft. Lewis. Postmark says "Lewis Branch" on the bottom half. He said that he expected to take his physical exam soon, so this must have been at the beginning of his service.

3. A postcard from his father to Earl, dated June 20, 1918, was addressed to Camp Lewis, Tacoma, Washington and re-addressed there to 40 Div., Camp Kearney, California. The Camp Lewis address jad beem crossed out with a Blue pencil and in blue was written "Co. I, 159 Inf."

4. Another card with a picture of Biscontie Hotel in Hutchinson, Kansas written July 2, 1918, says he was well and having a good time, that he had a fine swim and ice cream from the Red Cross. He said that he could not tell them where he was but they could guess.

5. A card written July 30, 1918 said he was well and fine and that he would write when he reached his destination. The postmark says "K.C. & Tucumsari R.P.O." I think. It is faint and hard to read in spots. I think this is a R.R. postmark.

6. A card witten to his folks, dated Aug 1, 1918, said he left Kansas City that morning and would be in St. Louis that night.

7. An American Red Cross card with no date on it and a Military censor post mark says that he is on board ship and was well, that his parents would receive a card as soon as they landed, telling them that he had arrived safely. This was apparently when he was on his way overseas.

8. The card that was sent to his parents when he arrived at his destination is a printed form that says: THE SHIP ON WHICH I SAILED HAS ARRIVED SAFELY OVERSEAS. Name: Pvt. Earl O. Mitten Organization: Company I, 159 Inf.

9. A military type Christmas Greeting to all the Folks Back Home in the Good Old U.S.A. from Pvt. Earl Mitten, Convalescent Camp No. 2 A.P.O. 758 finally arrived in Vici, Oklahoma january 5, 1919 according to a Vici postmark on it and had to be forwarded from there to Vancouver, B.C., where his folks had moved during his time overseas, and without his knowledge. I've heard Dad tell about being in the hospital while he was in the Army - a seige of flu I think.

10. Another card written May 22, 1919 says he was on board ship and expected to reach New York Sunday or Monday morning and that he had to go to Camp Lewis to be discharged he guessed. His return on this card says "Earl Mitten, 160 Inf. on S.S. Matsonic".

11. Another card that is a printed form said he had arrived onthe transport S.S. Motsonic and would go at once to Camp Mills, N.Y. The date he put on the card said 24-19 1919. Obviously a mistake. I think it should have read May 24, 1919. The 1919 on the card was in printed form and Dad had written 24-19 in front of that. The 24 is probably May 24 and the 19 was for 1919

Mr. Banks had been making his home here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.A.Banks, Main St., since July 5, 1930, when he was stricken with paralysis while enjoying an outing with his family at Buckeye Lake. He had regained considerable use of his body by walking and other exercises, but had been subject to frequent heart attacks. He graduated from the local high school in 1905 and from Ohio State University in 1910. For several years he has served as superintendent of power plant at the Ohio State University. During the World War he was commissioned a captain of the Auxiliary Reserves, but was not called for active service. He was a member of the Faculty Club of Ohio State University, and was ffiliated with the Odd Fellows order of Newcomertown. He was a member of the American Mechanical Engineers Society and the Columbus Sypmphony Orchestra.

My fathers was born and reared in Fulton, Morrow County, Ohio. I really don't know a lot about my father's up bring. His father was a blacksmith in Fulton as had been his father before him. Dad attended the local school in Fulton and completed the eigth grade. His father had attended the same school and also completed the eigth grade. This completed my fathers formal education. He did spend sometime during the thirty's living with his Uncle Lawrence Mulvain's family in Durrant, Illinois. He always spoke very highly of Uncle Lawrence. As a child I remember visiting in Durrant in the summer of 1946 and again in the early fifties for the funeral of Lloyd Mulvain.

Dad also spoke of his great-grand father Joseph Potts and of his Aunt Carrie Potts Darling. Carrie was a sister of Charles Bartley Potts, dad's grandfather. I don't remember visiting with Carrie at her home, but I do remember her visiting at our home many times. Carrie moved to Tucson, Arizona in the late forty's. She only returned to Ohio once after that. She died in Arizona in 1966. Carrie was also a favorite of Grandpa Bert Potts. Dad was never much for church attendance. His mother mentioned several times that he would leave church when ever possible, either by hook or krook. He was never a very religous person. I do not remember him every attending church except for special Christmas Programs, funerals and a few weddings. He was always leary of ministers. Dad and Mom were married August 29,1938 by Rev. LaRue at his home north LaRue, Ohio. They moved with his three children to their first home in Grand township. Dad farmed the ground on shares with the Lewis's who owned the farm. The farm was located one mile north of Route 303 on route 37 and then one mile west on the county road. The farm home was just north on the first county road west of route 37. The home was torn down in 1991. Allen and Harold were both born at this home. Foy was born at a Hospital in Kenton while the family lived a farm approximately two miles directily north of their first home. The family moved in 1943 to the 280 north west of Meeker. This home had been the home of Dallas Sims, grandfather of Rowena, some years before. Gerald farmed the farm for a couple of years. He purchased his first MM tractor while on this farm, prior to then he had farmed with horses. I can remember butchering while we lived on that farm. Michael was born while we lived her. Luther came home from World War II while we where living her. Dad got sick while living here with an accuate attack of ulcers. He spent a few days in the hospital. The family the winter on 1945/46 moved to Jack Sims' little house. This house was located just a few yards west of Jack's on Irvin Shoots Road. During 1946 Dad farmed for Shelton Kramp. In the early spring of 1947 Dad and Mom had a farm sale and moved to Meeker. The home was the last house on Agosta Meeker Road on the south edge of town. Dad and Mom both eventually died in this house. In early 1947 dad started to work for the Marion Power Shovel Company on the test stand. He work there until 1972 when he retired. The last several years with the Company he worked as maintainer. He was the only employee left who know and understood the older shovels. He call on customers with older machines to recommend parts needed to repair the older shovels. Dad spent his early years in retirement doing consulting work for customers of the Marion Power Shovel and helping Gary James on the farm. Dad had enphazena from his early smoking habit. He had kiked the smoking habit in 1948, but to late to correct the damage done. He suffered the last fews years of his life from the growing problem with emphazena. He lived the last few years with the fear of where his next preath would come from. He spent several weeks in the hospital during his last few years recovering from pneumonia. He was subject to pneumonia because of the effects of enphazema. He died in his sleep at his home in Meeker March 9, 1986.

I'd been told back in 1988 that they did marry, but recent newspaper articles called her "his companion" and she still went by the name CONLEY. In his obituary, she is called his wife in one place & his companion in another but still used the last name of CONLEY. One source told me they married in Aug. 1993, when he learned that he was dying of cancer. I've written and asked her if they did marry but to date do not have a reply, so you might just want to eliminate her name all together.
