He died on Jul 31 1866 in Owen Co., Indiana. He was buried in Sanders Cemetery, Worthington, Greene Co., Indiana. Iradel married first Oct 21, 1851, Mary Dean, daughter of Rev. William G. Dean and Ruth Darling. The wives would be cousins.

He died young when a hatchet or hammer fell on his head while he was a crawling baby. Geniger Danely Hitt gives the following account of his death, "died when thrown from a horse and it stepped on his stomach."

131. Mary Elizabeth DEAN was born on Feb 18 1843 in Coshocton Co., Ohio. She died on Sep 14 1933 in Gibbs, Adair Co., Missouri. She was buried in Brashear Cemetery, Adair Co., Missouri. Descendent: Lois (Mitten) Laird of Dighton, KS. Mary Elizabeth and Thomas were married at the home of William and Sarah Danely according to the pension papers of Thomas G. Mitten. William Danely was a brother-in-law of Mary Elizabeth's. Middletown no longer exists.

She was married to Thomas G. MITTEN (son of Thomas MITTEN and Elizabeth KELLEY) on Sep 22 1867 in Middletown, Jefferson Twp., Owen Co., Indiana. Thomas G. MITTEN was born on Mar 10 1843 in Holmes Co., Ohio. He died on Jun 11 1921 in Gibbs, Adair Co., Missouri. He was buried in Brashear Cemetery, Adair Co., Missouri. The family were members of the Methodist and United Brethren Churches. Thomas served in the Civil War. He was shot through the knee with a minnie ball, captured by the Confederates and spent time at Andersonville Prison. Prison doctors wanted to amputate his leg but he refused to let them even though gangrene had set in. Flies were terrible and the wound became infested with maggots which ate out the gangrent, which saved his life.

132. Emily Heslip "Emma" DEAN was born on Nov 11 1844 in Coshocton Co., Ohio. She died on Apr 9 1934 in Bayard, Morrill Co., Nebraska. Tradition says that she was named for her doctor. Emily Dean first saw her future husband when she and her younger sister, Rhoda, had gone to a singing school. Wilson Fiscus came from a neighboring town to lead and teach the class. He was a rather bushy-haired young man and as he strode to the front of the room, Emily leaned over and whispered in jest to Rhody, "That's my beau." They were introduced later that evening and thus began their courtship. He didn't like the name Emily, so always called her Emma. Emily and her twin sister, Emma, were delivered by either Dr. Thomas Heslip or Dr. Heslip Williams, both of whom practiced medicine in Linton twp., Coshocton County, Ohio. Emily's middle name was Heslip after her doctor. She gave the place and year of her birth as Ohio in 1847, and this date appears on her tombstone. However, the old family Bible, now owned by her daughter Emma Bessie Fiscus, shows the date 11 Nov 1844 as being originally written down, but someone later had written a 7 over the last 4. The 1847 date must be in error because the family was in Indiana at that time, not Ohio. Further, Rhoda, who was the young sister by two years probably was not born as late as 1849 since she married in in 1864. When one observes tht the husband was born in 1848, and adds to this the knowledge of woman's eternal vanity, the answer becomes clearer - for what woman wants to appear older than her husband? After Emily and Wilson were married in Owen County, they moved to Marshall County, Iowa; then to Audubon County, Iowa, where they bought 123 acres in 1874; to South Dakota in March of 1891; to Kansas in Nov 1907; and finally to Bayard, Nebraska, in 1908 where they homesteaded. Their two surviving children, now both married, soon followed and took homesteads nearby. Most of their descendants still live in the area. Wilson Fiscus was quite a singer, and one of his few extravagances was sending off for new song books, mostly hymnals. His daughter, Emma Bessie, recalls that it was the family custom to rest after the noon meal. Wilson would get his tuning fork and his newest song book and pull his chair ove close to the open kitchen door when the weather was nice. Taking his pitch from the tuning fork, he would sit there and beat time and teach himself new songs in a daily ritual of learning. When Emily was in her teens she had typhoid fever or some similar disease that seemed to affect her eyes, and she was cross eyed after that. She had dark brown hair and was well below medium height, a family characteristic. She and Wilson were very religious and helped start a county Sunday School called Red Willow after a nearby creek. They also kept a bed in their home reserved for the minister in case he should come by. Eugene Fiscus, son of Adam and Emily (Dean) Fiscus, remembered crossing the Mississippi River on a ferry when but three years old. In 1897 he and a friend went to Douglas County, Wyo., in a wagon drawn by a team of mules, passing through Crawford and Harrison, Nebraska. Here he worked on a sheep ranch and thrashed grain. He spent some time in Wyoming with "Doc" Middleton who hung around northwestern Nebraska along the Niobrara River. "Gene" didn't know the man was a wanted outlaw until later. He relinquished his Wyoming homestead, returned to Iowa and was married. H bought land east of Bayard, sold it and homesteaded about 11 miles northeast of Bayard. He is known for operating a steam thrashing rig. His daughter, Bessie McRae lived on the old homestead after his death. By: Shirley Henderson

134. Rhoda Ellen DEAN was born in 1846 in Jefferson Twp., Owen Co., Indiana. She died on May 6 1872 in Dewitt, Carroll Co., Missouri. Descendent: Shirley (White) Henderson of Lakin, KS

She was married to James Lawrence JOHNSON (son of James "Skillethead" JOHNSON and Hester Ann LIGHT) on Oct 20 1864 in Owen Co., Indiana. James Lawrence JOHNSON was born in Feb 1832 in Salem, Washington Co., Indiana. He died on Dec 3 1903 in San Antonio, Texas. He was buried in San Antonio Nat. James Lawrence Johnson was born in Feb., 1832, at Salem, Washington Co., Indiana, according to his military records. Within months of his birth, his parents returned to Owen County, where they had previously lived, and settled one mile south and a quarter mile east of Freedom in Secton 28. In the 1850 Owen County federal census, our subject calls himself Lawrence, a farmer, age 18. In the 1860 census, he is "J.L.", age 27, a school teacher, still living at home. When the Civil War began, Lawrence was mustered into service 29 July 1861 as a sergeant in Company I, 19th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. He is described in the Regimental Book as being six feet tall, blue eyes, black hair and a teacher. However, his Certificate of Disability for Discharge states that he had brown eyes, and this is correct. He was mustered in only a few days after the defeat of the Union Army at Bull Run. There was an urgent need for troops and the 19th left Indianapolis on August 5 for Washington D.C., where it joined the Army of the Potomac. It participated in the affair at Lewinsville on Sept., 11, and engaged in the advance upon and occupation of Falls Church on Sept., 28, both minor episodes. In the early part of October, the 19th went into winter quarters at Fort Craig on Arlington Heights, about three miles from Washington D.C., where it remained all winter. The 19th Indiana went on to become part of the famed Black Ht Brigade, sometimes called the Iron Brigade, and was engaged in most of the major battles of the Civil War. It had the dubious distinction of having lost in battle a higher percentage of soldiers than any other unit in the War. Lawrence saw none of this action. While at Fort Craig on the outskirts of Washington D.C., the regiment was without tents and blankets because enlistees came in such great numbers the army was unable to properly supply them. In January, 1862, Lawrence took fever and was hospitalized. Returned to duty, he again had to sleep on the frozen ground without blankets, and again incurred a severe cold in his lungs. He was sent to the Indiana Hospital at Patent Office in Washington D.C., where he was abl to serve during March and April as Ward Master. He was discharged from there on 12 May 1862, with chronic bronchities. His health was broken and remained so the rest of his life. His daughter, Jennie, believed mistakenly that he had lost his health while fighting through four years of Civil War. It could be that he never fired a shoot at the enemy. In February 1864, he was arrested in St. Louis, Missouri, on suspicion of being a deserter, amd held in the Scholfield Barracks for four days until confirmation was received from the Provost Marshall General's Office in Washington D.C., that he had been duly discharged. He married 20 Oct 1864 in Owen County, Indiana, Rhoda Ellen Dean. Her parents, Fenton and Elizabeth (Mulvane) Dean, lived one mile south and three miles west of the Johnson farm where Lawrence grew up. From old letters, written mostly by his wife (see letters following), we know that they went to Missouri, moving from place to place as Lawrence struggled with poor health to make a living by farming and by hauling fright in his wagon. His widowed father was with him, at least part of the time, until his death in 1868. They were in DeWitt, Carroll Co., Missouri, in March 1868; in Norborne, Carroll Co., March 1869 where their daughter, Jennie, was born; in Grand River Twp., Carroll Co., when the census was taken in June, 1870; in Houston, Texas where their son Lawrence may have been born. The last letter extant was written 23 Dec 1871 from DeWitt, Carroll Co. Rhoda Ellen says "my health is very bad....been in bed for two weeks." She died 6 May 1872, age 33, and may have been buried ina DeWitt cemetery called Old Pleasant Park, which was abandoned long ago. No headstone was found for her there but, considering their low estate, there probably never was one. A charcoal sketch of Rhoda Ellen survives in the possession of her granddaughter, Hazel (White) Burkhart #4/6. Rhoda was probably below medium height like the rest of her family, with light brown hair and blue eyes. She wrote well, even some poetry, in a time when few women were literate, and may have been artistic as well. Her mental stability is suspect, however. She is said to have been very morbid and depressive, and out of her mind entirely at the time of her death. (Interview, Elizabeth Smartt White, #4/1) After the death of his wife, Lawrence took his two children back to Freedon, Indiana. He left his daughter, Jennie, with his sister, Julia Arthur, and his son, Lawrence, with his sister, Mary Ann Trulove. Julie's husband, Thomas Arthur, was made legal guardian of the children. the Johnson family physician, Dr. Anderson J. Minish, advised Lawrence to go to Florida for his health and this he did, leaving Indiana in February 1875. On 10 March 1879, in Levy Co., Florida, he married as his second wife, Mrs. Matilda A. Locke, who had several nearly grown children from a previous marriage. The 1880 census of Alachua Co. lists this family as J. L. Johnson, age 50, farmer, b. Ga.(Sic); Matilda, 52, wife, laborer, b. Ga.; Stephen, 24, son, laborer, b. Ga.; and William, 14, son, b.Ga. They were living in township 10. Lawrence began trying to farm around Fannin in Levy Co., about a mile from the Suwannee River, and he was also able to do some teaching. He lived thereto around August of 1890 when he returned to Owen Co., Indiana, for a visit lasting several months. Later, he seems to have been living in the town of Judson, part of which was in Levy Co., and part in Alachua Co., Fla. He had a love of gardening, and once drove 25 miles in a horses and buggy to get a slip from a Mermaid rose. Back in Indiana, Lawrence's sister, Julia, became ill with "lung consumption", now commonly called tuberculosis, and only Jennie was to come close to her to care for her needs because of the contagious nature of the disease. Julia died 10 Oct 1884. The husband was unkind, and so Jennie was without a suitable home. Lawrence sent for her and her little brother, and the two of them went by train to Florida. Jennie was to recall year later with embarrassment that on the way to Florida they spent the night in a hotel near the railroad tracks. They overslept, and were awakened by the train's whistle as it was about to pull out. They made a mad dash and managed to catch the train in time, but Jennie forgot to pay the innkeeper for their lodgings. There, Lawrence, Jr., with his cheerful, outgoing disposition, made himself at home; but Jennie, whose disposition was opposite of her brother's, did not. She found her father strange after so many years of absence. She did not get along with her step-mother, and she was homesick for Indiana. In time enough money was saved for her to return to her old home. She did not remain in Owen County long, however. She shortly left for Newton County in the northern part of Indiana, where she joined her father's sister, Louisa Ellen (Johnson) Burton, and family, or perhaps the family of one of her three Light cousins who had also moved there. In the county seat of Kentland, she went to work as a domestic in the home of the town's banker, -----Ade, brother of George Ade, the playwright. On 13 April 1887, Lawrence, then living in Trenton, (now Gilchrist Co., bt part of Levy Co. then), Flo., applied for an army pension because of ill health. By: Shirley Henderson

139. Martha Jane MULVANE was born on Aug 23 1851 in Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. She died on Feb 1 1939 in Hardinville, Crawford Co., Illinois. She was buried in Hardinville Cemetery, Hardinville, Illinois. Obituary: Martha Jane, daughter of John and Jane Mulvane, was born August 23, 1851, at Coshocton County, Ohio and departed this life February 1, 1939 age 87 years, 5 months, and 8 days. When a child she came to Illinois with her parents and settled on a farm south of Hardinville. Here she spent her childhood days. She was united in marriage with George M. Fritz on December 8, 1872. To this union was born 7 children. The four suviving are Mrs Cora Goodman, J.T. Fritz, George W. Fritz and Mrs Ethel Smith. Three children, M.L. Fritz, Alice Fritz and Mrs Mary Carleton, with her husband having preceded her in death. She was converted in her home about 1886 and three years later united with the United Brethren class at the Mayer School house and later when, the church was organized at Hardinville was a charter member and during these many years she has faithfully served the church and her Lord whom she loed with all her soul. She was a bible student and during the last few years of her life she could not see to read her bible which was a sore trial to her. She would have someone read to her. She would always have her folks in the church service when possible and only Sunday ago she worried because no one was attending church services.

She was married to George Merriot "Mel" FRITZ (son of Adam FRITZ and Catharine "Kate" REED) on Dec 8 1872 in Hardinville, Crawford Co., Illinois. George Merriot "Mel" FRITZ was born on Aug 18 1844 in Owen Co., Indiana. He died on Aug 21 1911 in Hardinville, Crawford Co., Illinois. He was buried in Hardinville Cemetery, Hardinville, Illinois. Her gravestone reads "Mrs. E.J. Davis." No dates are given. Next to her is a daughter by her first marriage: "Zoe, daughter of W.A. and E.J. Dropre, 28 Sep 1864 - 25 May 1883." There is no gravestone here for Capt. Freeman Davis (new information; Burial elsewhere in same Cemetery with headstone, perhaps by 1st wife (?) who has no marker). Freeman Davis called himself a carpenter when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. B 80th Ohio Inf. Vol. on 7 Oct 1861 at Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio for a three year term. When his term was up on 20 Jan 1864, he reenlisted the next day at Huntsville, Alabama, and received his final discharge on 13 August 1865 in Little Rock, Ark. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 11 July 1864, and to Captain on 6 June 1865. He was described as 5 foot 8 inches tall with brown hair and grey eyes. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for "most distinguished gallantry in action" in the battle of Lookout Mountain at Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga, Tenn. , on 25 Nov 1863. He rescued the regimental colors after the color bearer was killed. However, he did not actually receive the medal until 22 Mar 1898, less then a year before his death. Freeman first applied for a veteran's pension on 29 May 1879 at Butler, Bates Co., Missouri, saying that he was partially unfit for manual labor because of chronic rheumatism caused by long exposure to wet and cold weather during his war service. His occupation was now that of a wool spinner. There is no response to his application.

His natural aptitude in this direction invariably proved him a past master in great discomfort of those who sought to match their wit with his. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Emily O. Neighbor or Cleveland and Mrs. John Gardner of this city.

Daniel McCook, and served as Second Lieutenant. His brother, S.M., who was killed, was Captain. He received his wound June 27, 1864, and died at Chattanooga July 8, attended by his wife and brother. Our subject was wounded August 5, 1863, at La Vergne, Tenn., and had his left limb broken in two places. His mother was killed by being thrown from a horse. He was married twice; the first marriage was March 11, 1858, with Harriet A. Piper, daughter of Jesse O. Piper, who was born January 2, 1839, died February 28, 1872. By this marriage there were born four children-Jesse E., Elsie E. (deceased), Mary F. and Frank E. (deceased). The second marriage was on March 12, 1873, with Miss Emma O. Davis, a native of this county, where she was born Mrch 2, 1850. She is a daughter of Charles F. Davis. By this marriage there are four children-Frank S., Laura A. (deceased), Estelle H. and Edna O. Out subject was born September 24, 1836, in Newcomerstown. He bears the name of one of the oldest families in this vicinity, and from which Newcomerstown first received a name, it being formerly called Neighborstown.

Newspaper clipping January 14, 1926 ALCOHOL POISONING Caused death of Bethel Martin at Palestine AFTER LONG DRINKING SPREE Which started on New Year's Night and Continued Until Firday Morning of Last Week One man dead and another in jail was the result of a protracted drinking spree in Palestine, last week. Bethel Martin, aged about 70 years, died at his home in that village last Friday morning about 1 o'clock, and John Lawrance, one of the county's perpetual bootleggers, was placed in jail on a technical charge of drunkenness, following the death of Martin. Later a charge of violating the prohibition act was placed against him. Martin has for years been a moderate drinker, but since the death of his wife some three months ago, has been drinking heavily, keeping liquor at his house constantly, and also visiting at the home of Lawrance, where he, engaged in long drinking sprees. Information furnished at the inquest last Friday night showed that Martin had been away from his home, presumably drunk, since the Tuesday before. Martin, who lived at the south end of the main business street in Palestine had as company in his home, Mr. and Mrs. John Zeigler, Mrs. Zeigler acting as his housekeeper. At the inquest, these people, who bear a good reputation in their community, testified that Mr. Martin had started drinking on New Year's night. That he went away from his home on a party with a number of other men, and came home in an intoxicated condition. He remained at his home until Tuesday evening, January 5, eating supper at home, then leaving and going to the home of John Lawrance. More liquor was procured and the two men started in on a real spree. At the inquest it developed that Martin did not leave the Lawrance house at any time following his arrival on Tuesday night, until about 8 o'clock Friday morning. But during this time, he had wanted to go back to his home, but was prevailed on to remain. During the three nights and two days, Lawrance testified at the inquest, neither of the men removed their clothing. During that time, also, there were several visitors at the home, a part of whom are said to have participated in the drinking. Among these visitors were mentioned Al Climer, Charles Daugherty, Denver Folck, Chalk Daily, and Pete Love. Some of these admitted to the coroner that they had been drinking with Martin and Lawrance, but none of them seemed to know where the liquor came from. Daugherty is said to have remained at the Lowrance home on Thursday night. Mrs. Lawrance had been out of town all the time until Thursday night when she returned home from a visit at Mattoon. Friday morning some one about the house, sober enough to realize the condition of Martin, called Al Climer to come to the house and take the aged man to his home. Climer, with Daugherty, went to Lowrance's, helped Martin into an automobile and took him to his home, where he was put to bed. A short time later Martin got up, went to his garage, got a pint of white mule and returned with it to his bedroom, taking a drink or two from the bottle. A short time later the man became violently ill and died within a few minutes. Dr. Illyes was called and made an examination, and later Undertaker Daid Fife was called. It was decided that the case was one for the coroner to handle, and Coroner Sloan was summoned, arriving that evening and impaneled a jury, consisting of A.T.Buchanan, John Phipps, French Freeman, Rev. Soures, Mr. Sloan and S.G. Richards. An abdominal autopsy was performed, and after taking evidence the jury reached a verdict that the deceased came to his death by poisoning from alcoholism. Sheriff Moore and States Attorney Plunkett assisted the coroner in holding the inquest. Following the return of the verdict, Lawrance was placed under arrest and brought to the Robinson jail. He was in a serious condition himself, due to the amount of white mule he had been drinking and was in no condition to be closely examined at the inquest. He has been one of the worst liquor offenders that the county has had to deal with in many years, having served time on several occasions in the count jail, and at least once being sent to the penal farm. An effort is being made by the officers to find out who it was that furnished the liguor for the spree, and if this party is discovered, charges of manslaughter will be placed against him.

His estate was assessed at about $950,000 in 1919. Skillful administration by nephew David Mulvane and relatives of his dau.-in-law Kate Mulvane in New York City resulted in the estate under admn. increasing to $1,350,000 by 1928. His will provided for a $70,000 bequest to Washburn College in Topeka, a $95,000 trust fund for dau. H. Lucile, and numerous $1,000 gifts to more distant relations. His assets included stocks in Beatrice Creamery, Bank of Topeka, and a land co.in Manitou, CO -- totaling almost $400,000. Also in his possession were the Mulvane Building ($118,000), Bent Co., Colo. land ($163,000), and over $80,000 in loans payable to him. The two daughters of his deceased adoptive son "Don" became New York society figures in the 1920's.

Obituary: John R. Mulvane, president of the Bank of Topeka, pioneer financier of Topeka, and for more than 40 years one of the leading figures in the business affairs of the middle west, died at his home, 315 East Sixth avenue..... (he) had been on the decline physically, altho mentally he was as keen as during all the years he had spent in building up one of the most enviable reputations as a capitalist and organizer of big business interests..... The name of John R. Mulvane as one of the directors or officers of any organization assured the investing public that it was sound financially and that it was sure to succeed.

Mulvane, President of the Bank of Topeka, died at her home, 315 East Sixth Street, at 5:35 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after a three day illness from intestinal trouble. She was 69 years of age. Mrs. Mulvane was born in Balston Spa, Saratoga County, New York, April 9, 1845, and was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A.J. Chadsey. In 1870 she was married to O. Leroy Sedgwick, and came to Kansas on her honeymoon. Mr. Sedgwick was a real estate dealer, one of the pioneers in that business in this section. Mr. and Mrs. Sedgwick settled in St. Marys but almost immediately after came to Topeka, where Mrs. Sedgwick spent her honeymoon as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Mulvane, in the house in which she died. In 1895 Mr. Sedgwick died in Rossville. Mrs. Mulvane was executor of his estate. Mrs. Sedgwick went to Decatur, Illinois, to live. In 1903, following the death of Mrs. Mulvane, she married to John R. Mulvane and removed to Topeka. Mrs. Mulvane was noted as a philanthropist, her charities being many. She was for many years actively identified with the work of Ingleside House, the provident association and YWCA. She was also a prominent member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by Mr. Mulvane; a sister, Miss S. Lillie Chadsey of Decatur; a brother John H. Chadsey of Rochester, New York; and two step children, Don Mulvane and Mrs. Lucile Nicholson. A niece, Mrs. B. C. Junkins of St. Louis is at present in Topeka. On account of the illness of Mr.Mulvane, who has been sick all winter, funeral arrangements are tentative. However, it is planned to have the service at the house, 315 East Sixth, Monday afternoon.

His inclinations were, however, toward mercantile rather than a professional life, and in 1856, when about 19 years old, he went to Princeton, Ill.,and established himself in the dry goods business. He also operated a farm and later sold his store and went into the hardware business...... In May, 1876 he came to (Kansas) and has been a resident of Topeka since that time. The business interests of Topeka, and indeed of the whole state, owe much to his energy and wise judgment. Perhaps no other man in Kansas has been engaged in more extensive and varied business enterprises than has Mr. Mulvane during the past twenty years, and certainly no man has been more uniformly successful in his ventures...... From 1885 to 1888 Mr. Mulvane was president of the Chicago, Kansas & Western Railroad Co.,during the building of 900 miles of road in Kansas for the Santa Fe Railroad Co. .... He is strongly Republican in his political belief, and as such represented his district in the Illinois legislature in 1872 and 1873, but has never taken an active part in political affairs in Kansas.

In his various trans- actions several tracts of valuable land came into his possession which he still owns..... Mr. Mulvane had been engaged by the Santa Fe in extending lines ..... in the counties of Sumner and Cowley. The flourishing town of Mulvane was so designated in honor of Joab Mulvane. (He organized the first telephone system in Topeka and was president of the electic utility for many years. He was president and then owner for a time of the Topeka Water Co., and was on the board of his brother's bank for decades.)

W. Phineas Mulvane took over management of his father's mercantile in Newcomerstown, finally selling out in 1895. In 1883 he and brother G.W. were original partners in founding the Oxford Bank. His brick home (probably his father's previously) was razed in 1937 to make way for a new Newcomerstown post office.

He attended Newcomerstown High School, and later Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan. After leaving college, he became associated with the Oxford Bank in which he served in various capacities during the remainder of his life. In 1931, he was made President of the institution and remained in that position until his retirement in 1937. His father, William P. Mulvane, and his uncle, George W. Mulvane, along with Theodore Carter, founded the Oxford Bank in 1885 as a private institution. It became a State bank in 1915. His great-grandfather, John Mulvane, was one of the first settlers in this vicinity, coming here shortly after 1800. Mr. Mulvane was a member of the Newcomerstown I.O.O.F. lodge and of the Free Rebekah Lodge. Until January 1937, he lived in the old family residence on the site where the post office now stands. When the old brick home was tor down he purchased a residence on North College street where he lived until his death. Mr Mulvane never married.

She was also affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star, the White Shrine, the Rebecca lodge, the Ladies' Auxiliary of the S. of V., the WCTU., being one of the crusaders.

He enlisted in August 1862 in the Fifty-second Regiment, Company D, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served six months, being discharged on account of disability. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Trustee, Justice of the Peace, member of the City Council and the school board, and also president of the Fair Association two terms. He established his merchant business at Newcomerstown in 1865. Mrs. Dent is a member of the Methodist Protestant Church.

David moved to Princeton, Illinois in 1873; to Topeka, Kansas in 1881; and to Amboy, California in 1908; retired to Los Angeles in 1919. He operated a very successful gypsum mill with his son at Amboy; successful hardware merchant and rancher. He was in the 80th Ohio Reg. during the Civil War, seeing heavy action in Mississippi & elsewhere. He served in the Civil War, was appointed a second lieutenant 4 September 1865, and was mustered out as a sergeant from the 80th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, (History of Tuscarawas County). In 1873, he laid out an addition of 36 lots, 87 to 122 inclusive lots bounded by the Pittsburg, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railroad, College, State and Chestnut Streets, in Newcomerstown. In April, 1874, he joined his brothers, John R. and Joab, in their business ventures in Princeton, Illinois. He ran the store there after the two brothers moved to Topeka. In May 1881 he followed them to Topeka, Kansas where he managed the cattle and ranching business of the Mulvane brothers. Later he moved to California where he managed a gypsum plant located between Barstow and Needles. When his brother, John R., died in 1918, David was living in Los Angles.

Obituary: Mrs. W. J. Ehrsam received the sad news Saturday morning of the death of her father, David A. Mulvane of Los Angeles, California, Friday night from injuries as the result of being struck by a motor car. Mr. Mulvane was in the hardware and real estate business in Topeka more than 25 years. His hardware was located at 715 Kansas Ave. He sold his business several years before he moved to California and was engaged in the real estate business. He left Topeka for California about 15 years ago. After going to California he was in the cement manufacturing business.

He was married to Gertrude C. BROWN (daughter of James BROWN and Isabella) on Sep 6 1866 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. Gertrude C. Mulvane, 82, one of the founders and president of the Oxford Bank for forty-six years, died at his home on West Church St. at 2:30 pm Wednesday. His remarkable record of 46 years of uninterrupted service in the banking business is perhaps unequalled in the history of banking in this state, except by the similar record of heir co-partner, Theo. F. Carter, cashier of the Oxford Bank for the same period of time. Mr. Mulvane, together with his brother, W.P.Mulvane, and Theo. F. Carter, were the founders of the Oxford Bank which was organized in 1883. Mr. Mulvane was the first president and Mr. Carter the first cashier.

Powleson is called a retired merchant who engaged in the hardware business for eight years in Newcomerstown, and who has been a resident there for thirteen years. Oliver Powleson enlisted twice during the rebellion, first as a private in the sixteenth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F, and for the second time in the Eighteenth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B, as a private and was promoted to Captain, serving from April 1864 to 1865. During the last year of the war, he was with General John A. Logan's staff. His first battle was at Inka, second at Corinth, where he received an ounce bullet in his left side. The next battle was at Vicksburg, then Mission Ridge and Resaca, besides numerous skirmishes. After the close of the Civil War he entered the hardware business at Newcomrstown and later in a similar business in Topeka, Kansas. At the time of his death only three of his six children survived; Bert P. Powleson of New York City, Mary Senhauser of Zanesville and Mrs. Lucille Nicholson of Long Beach, California. One son Willis Powleson, was killed at the age of 17 when he attempted to board a train in this city.

Obituary: Capt. Powleson was a member of the M.E.Church, the GAR, the IOOF Lodge and Lone Star Lodge F&AM of Newcomerstown. He removed from Newcomerstown to New Philadelphia in 1895, entering in the real estate business, and later served one term mayor of New Philadelphia.

180. John Dean MULVANE was born on Dec 26 1835 in Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. He died on Jul 2 1912 in Raymond, Lancaster Co., Nebraska. He was buried in Oak Creek Cemetery, Raymond, Nebraska. lived near Isabel, Edgar Co.,Illinois 1866-1875; afterwards Nebraska Biography in "Album of Lancaster Co.,Nebraska" (1888) "He (John Dean Mulvane) was seventeen years of age at the death of his father. He was the recipient, thanks to his parents, of a first class education, and upon its completion worked upon his father's farm until he became of age, about which time he was married. The lady to whom he was married, was Matilda F. Mardis, a daughter of William Mardis, a school and music teacher and farmer. To them have been given six children, five of whom are living, and are named as follows: Casius M., Ozro H., Frank E., William and Emma I. "After his marriage our subject worked his father's farm until 1866 when he removed to Edgar County, Illinois, and bought a farm, which was at that time slightly improved. With this work our subject progressed until the whole had been brought into good condition, nd in 1875, he sold this property, came to Nebraska and bought his present farm, at that time in a state of native wilderness. He set to work, and speedily had made quite a change in the appearance of things. His house and farm buildings were put up substantially, and with more regard for comfort and convenience than to the tricks and fashions of the professional architect. There were very few houses in the district, and he had only three neighbors within a circle of five miles, with the exception of Indians, of whom there were plenty. Wolves and wildcats and oter animals, moved in large numbers over the prairie in all their native untutored and untamed savagery, occasionally causing considerable trouble. Shortly after he purchased this farm, and just as his first lot of wheat and corn was preparing to make its bow with a good grace, the whole farm was covered, in common with the district generally, with grasshoppers, who devoured everything green that was to be seen. The only crop our subject could raise that year for home use was some late corn planted the 20th of June after the grasshoppers had retired.... "He is the owner of a fine farm on section 25, West Oak Precinct comprising 160 aces of first class botton land... "After years of toil, labor, danger, and struggle, Mr. Mulvane is enjoying the pleasantness and quite of a more retired life, reaping the benefit of previous years.

183. Orin A. MULVANE was born on Nov 4 1842 in Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. He died on Oct 28 1914 in Newman City, Douglas Co., Illinois. Orin enlisted October 10, 1861 as a private for three years in Co. B. 80th OVI at Newcomerstown, and he reenlisted on February 27, 1864 as a corporal. He was mustered out with the company at Little Rock, Arkansas, on August 13, 1865. He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, light hair and blue eyes. When the Civil War was over, he farmed for his widowed mother until 1866, when he, his two married brothers and his mother moved to Illinois. He settled on a small farm at Camargo, Douglas Co., until 1872, when his poor health forced him to rent his farm and move to Edgar Co. for a year. He returned to his farm the summer and fall of 1873, and then moved into Newman, Douglas Co., where he worked as a grocer when he was able. During the Civil War while stationed at Paducah, Ky., he contacted chronic diarrhea which often confined him to bed. In later life, he complained of his heart and lungs, shrunken hip, and general debility. He died Oct 28, 1914 of toxemia due to cystitis at Newman. His pension at the time was $25 a month. They had no children.

He was married to Sarah A. HEDGE on Sep 12 1865 in Coshocton Co., Ohio. Sarah A. HEDGE was born in 1844 in Murray, Kentucky. She died on Aug 26 1921 in Newman City, Douglas Co., Illinois. He was a Civil War veteran and photographer. He and Sarah had no children.

Sarah Clifton Mulvane Sultzer was a daughter of James and Elizabeth Mulvane, and was born on the Plains in Coshocton County, February 26, 1846. In 1873 she was united in marriage to Wesley B. Sultzer who died a number of years ago. Mrs. Sultzer taught in the public school of Newcomerstown during her early life, and has lived here practically all of her life except for a brief residence at Uhrichsville. She became a member of the M.E. Church during her early life. A host of friends will cherish her memory. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Maude H. Scott of Newcomerstown and Mrs. James M. Dillon of Columbus; also by four children of Mr. Sultzer by a former marriage. She also leaves one brother Dr. G.J,Mulvane of Topeka, Kansas; one sister Mary Mulvane of Newcomerstown and seven grandchildren.

She was married to Wesley Browning SULTZER on Sep 17 1873 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. Wesley Browning SULTZER was born in 1836 in Murray, Kentucky. He was a tailor in Newcomerstown; Sarah was a school teacher and a seamstress in the same home where Vane and Barbara Scott now live. Sarah and Wesley were separated for many years after he became addicted to alcohol, but were never legally divorced. Wesley was married to Sarah Weir (first), had daughters, Elizabeth and Hattie and sons, Fred and Clifton Sultzer. After their separation Sarah sued in court for half of Wesley's pension to care for his children...and won. He died at the Soldier's and Sailor's Home in Sandusky, Ohio, buried in East State Street Cemetery, Newcomerstown, Ohio.

It lists him as a physician age 30 and Josephine, his wife, age 25. "Guy J. Mulvane was born in Newcomerstown, Ohio February 24, 1850. He graduated from college with a degree in medicine. He practiced in Oakland, Illinois, until 1883, then moved to Topeka, Kansas. At Paris, Illinois in 1875, he married Josephine Hollis." Paris is in Edgar County. Oakland is in the adjoining county of Coles. John D. Mulvane, son of John M. and Sarah (Dean) Mulvane, farmed in Edgar County, Ilinois from 1866 to 1875. John D. and Junkin would be cousins.

Obituary: Dr. Mulvane was a resident of Topeka for 40 years. He died at his home at 116 East Seventh Street. Dr. G.J.Mulvane received his professional taining in Chicago. A few years after completing his course he came to Topeka with Mrs. Mulvanie ot join his brother, Dr. P.I.Mulvane who had already begun to practice in Topeka. His funeral was held at Grace Cathedral.

I visited with people who knew Sarah Ellen (Mulvane) Simpson, and she alwys said she was born in Newcomerstown, Ohio, which is in Tuscarawas County.

Willie A. Simpson's birth date at Millersburg, Iowa, is figured from age 2 years, 1 month, 24 days on his tombstone at Millersburg. Died 19 November 1863.

James H. Simpson's children were born in St. Louis, Mo. Elmer Ellsworth Simpson's children were born in Kansas City, Kansas. Florence Mabel Hedrick was born in Kansas City, Kansas. Charles William Simpson's children were born in Kansas City, Ks., the twins, John Phillip, Jr., and James Robert, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Zilla Alice (Mulvane) Simpson died 17 August 1922. At the time of her probate, her husband, James H. Simpson, was living in Zepherhills, Florida. (Source: Probate files, Iowa County, Iowa.) He was listed in the 1920 census at Zepherhills, retired, age 74. I will get his birth date from his death certificate sometime becasue I am curious about this family, although there appears to be no possible relationship between James H. Simpson's family and the William Simpson family, although one son of Andrew's is James H. Simpson. The family story is that he didn't have a middle name, and just took the initial H. for his middle name, but I don't believe it. Unfortunately, I haven't any idea what the H stood for, or do I have any means of ever finding out since everyone else sticks to the story.

I have gathered bits of information on this James H. Simpson family, but I wasn't interested until recently on its origins.

Zilla Alice Mulvane married James H. Simpson on 30 October 1870, at Marengo. Jenkins Mulvane approved. (Source: Iowa County Death Index) Rachel Mulvane and the James H. Simpson family are all in unmarked graves except for Charles Bert Simpson, whose marker was placed by a step-daughter.

Elmer J. Simpson, 22, son of J. H. Simpson and Zilla Mulvane, married Mary E,. Gleason, 19, daughter of William Silas Gleason and Lydia McAnnich, on 05 June 1906. (Source: Iowa County marriage records. Unfortunately, I had to figure the year from the ages because I didn't write it down.) I don't know anything about the Eve Mae ______, but you would think Max would know. Max and Maxine both born in 1910 ???

William Simpson and his family apparently immigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1847, arriving at the Port of New Orleans. Unfortunately, there are three months of records missing from the Port of New Orleans arrivals in 1847, and the Simpson family was not found in the microfilm of the other nine months. In a History of the Simpson Family, Lois Simpson Lowrey, wrote that John G. Simpson, who was a ship's carpenter, came to America first, and worked at Algiers, a section of New Orleans, before moving to Buffalo, New York. The William Simpson family, on the advice of John, decided to immigrate around 1847, and accordingto the History of Iowa County, Iowa, the family spent about one year at Algiers, and then removed to New York State. The 1850 New York federal census records list William Simpson and his wife, Julia, as living in Chautaugua County, New York. The household consisted of John G., Alexander, William, and Andrew. James Edward is missing, but he had supposedly been apprenticed to a blacksmith and may have been in another household. The two women, Cynthia and Jane Simpson, are also enumerated in the Simpson household. Cynthia is the first wife of John G., and Jane may be the first wife of William. Cynthia (Nichols) Simpson died young, but it is not known what happened to Jane. William, Jr., was married to a Jeannie Simpson at the time of his death in Victor, Iowa. James Edward Simpson moved to Michigan around 1855, and married Tryphena Eastman. He was listed in the 1860 Michigan census as a member of the Eli Eastman household. William, Julia, Andrew, and John G., went to Iowa County, Iowa, in 1857, and lived in several towns. James Edward Simpson joined the family in Victor, Iowa, around 1870. William, Sr., John G., James Edward, and Andrew were all living in Victor, in the 1870 Iowa census. William, Jr., may have been living in California at this time, and Alexander C., lived in San Francisco, in 1877. There are listings of him in San Francisco and Oakland up to 1881, but the trail then ends, and he may have died around 1884. John G. 's daughter, Julia A., married Jerome Fuller Pebbles, born 02 May 1844, at Wethersfield, Wyoming County, New York, the son of Samuel and Mary Johnson (Warren) Pebbles, and lived in Colorado Springs. They are listed in 1920 Colorado census. John G., moved to Colorado Springs about the same time, and died in 1911 at Colorado Springs. His daughter, Cynthia J. Simpson, was the informant on the death certificate. She later married, according to Lowrey History, but he was buried as Cynthia J. Simpson. John G. Simpson's wife, Martha (Hosmer) Simpson, was born in England on 11 December 1821, the daughter of Joseph and Ann (Thorpe) Hosmer. She died 01 July 1915, at Colorado Springs, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery along with John G., Cynthia J. Simpson, and Jerome F. and Julia a. (Simpson) Pebbles. Edward Payson Simpson, the son of John Gould and Cynthia (Nichols) Simpson, was born 27 February 1849, at Sherman, New York, and lived in Iowa with his father John G., and with the Andrew H. Simpson family. Apparently, he spent a lot of time with Sarah Ellen (Mulvane) Simpson. There is family information on Edward Simpson, but much of it cannot be confirmed. He lived in Chicago for many years, and apparently had several occupations, but according to the family, he was a theater manager. In one Illinois census, his occupation is listed as theatricals, but city diectory listings indicate he held editorial positions. In the 1920 Florida Federal Census, he was listed as an editor, and on his death certificate, his occupation was listed as a reporter for the Miami Herald, although this seems unlikely at his age. He may have been a local stringer. According to his death notice published in the Melbourne newspaper, he must of lived in Philadelphia for a time, since he transferred his Elks membership from that city. He supposedly visited Scotland, and wrote a genealogy of the Simpson Family which was lost in a fire in Florida. There is a letter from him to James H. Simpson, the oldest son of Andrew and Sarah (Mulvane) Simpson, but it was not possible to prove any of the information in Chicago. Edward Simpson apparently married Olive Brooks around 1888, but the place is unknown. There apparently weren't any children, and it is not known if Olive Brooks was previously married, and had children which were deceased. Edward Simpson died 24 August 1926, at Melbourne, Florida, and was buried in the Melbourne Cemetery. His wife, Olive Brooks Simpson, born circa 1853, in New York, died 08 December 1936, and was buried at Boonville, New York. James Edward Simpson had three children that lived to adulthood: William D., John F., Lois A., Minnie B. died at Victor, at 17. Andrew Hart and Sarah Ellen (Mulvane) Simpson had Willie A., who died young, James H., Elmer Ellsworth, Ulysses Grant, Charles William and Etta Simpson.

Two children, born to Ulysses Grant Simpson and Amanda Pauline Hanson, perhaps twins, were supposedly stillborn, but only one child was listed in the Kansas City, Kansas, death records on 05 May 1897, and it indicated a previous birth. Grant and Amanda adopted Florence Mabel Hedrick. She married a widower, Joseph Harrison Robinson, and had one daughter, Florence (Dinty) Wiltsch, who lives in St. Louis. She has three grown children. Amanda married (2) Harry P. Phillips on 11 May 1943. Nothing is known about him, but he may have died in California also, since no record of his death has been found in the Kansas area.

He was the seventh mayor of Newcomerstown and also served as secretary of the school board.

Ohio Death certificate # 12599 listed him as a carpenter retired 30 years.

He was married to Mary Ann BENTON (daughter of Thomas BENTON and Rebecca HUNARD) on May 21 1867 in Port Washington, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. Mary Ann BENTON was born on Jan 15 1838 in Brownsville, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. She died on Jan 10 1919 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. Sdhe leaves in deep sorrow her husband, three sons, two daughters, three grandchildren, five brothers, two sisters and many near relatives and friends to mourn their loss, but we do not mourn as those who have no hope. Dictionary of American Biography (1936), Vol. 19, p.138: In 1876 Theodore Vail became general superintendent of the (U.S. Postal system) railway mail service. Meantime Alexander Graham Bell had invented the telephone and Gardiner G. Hubbard had begun to organize the business. Hubbard recognized the need for a young man of vision, ability, and force to carry on the development of the telephone industry. Knowing Vail through his active interest in the postal service, Hubbard singled him out and persuaded him to undertake the work under the title of general manager of the Bell Telephone Company. Between May, 1878 and September, 1887 Vail organ- ized the expanding telephone system ..... he incorporated in 1885 a special subsidiary company, the American Telephone & Telegraph Company, of which he was the first president.......He resigned (in 1887) from the AT & T company and from all other responsibilities, and retired in 1889 to a farm he had bought at Lyndonville,Vt.. ....(From 1894 to 1907) he turned his interest and energy into utility projects in Argentina..... With the expiration of the Bell telephone patents in 1893 and 1894, hundreds of independent telephone companies sprang up and entered into local competition with the Bell organizations. It was not yet generally realized that the telephone was a natural monopoly..The directors of the Bell company now urged Vail to take hold of the industry again, and on May 1, 1907, his election as president of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company was announced.
