+127 i. Solomon DEAN.

+128 ii. Jane DEAN.

+129 iii. Sarah Ann DEAN.

130 iv. John DEAN was born in 1838 in Murray, Kentucky. He died on Aug 28 1862 in Gainesville, Virginia. He was killed in the Civil War at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, which was a part of the Second Battle of Bull Run near Gainesville, Virginia.

39. John W MULVANE Sr was born on Jan 9 1813 in Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. He died on Nov 28 1900 in Hardinville, Crawford Co., Illinois. He was buried in Hardinville Cemetery, Hardinville, Illinois. !2nd cousin to his wife Jane Jones

John's name first appears in the 1840 census of Coshocton County, Ohio, as the head of household consisting probably of his younger brother Andrew; his sister Charity; and an unidentified female age 10 to 15. His father had died in 1829 when he was only 15 and his mother probably died in the late 1830's or these children would have been living with her. The 1850 census for Coshocton County, Ohio, Adams Township taken on the 19th of November shows John as a farmer, his wife Jane age 28 and their children as William age 8, Hanah age 6, Mary age 3 and John age 1. John's parentage is proved by a land dedd dated 17 October 1838, in which he is named as one of the heirs of William Mulvane, and in another dedd dated 15 December 1840, in which he sells his inherited share of this land to his cousins, John and David Mulvane of Newcomerstown, Ohio. The records of the Evans Creek Presbyterian church, Bakersville, Adams Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, shows that on 24 June 1833, the children of Mrs. Ann Jones were baptized. They were Jane, John, William and Jared Jones. Later , there is the notation, no date given, "Jane Jones, now Mulvane, dismissed." John W.'s uncle, Junkin Mulvane and his wife wife Monica, also attended this church, and their son, William Burr, was baptized there on 30 September 1838. The church burned down in 1905, and only the records prior to about 1868 were saved. In 1893, Jane Mulvane united with the U.B. Church of Hardinville, Illinois. In October, 1854, they moved to Martin Township, Crawford County, Illinois, when that part was little more than a wilderness, to the farm where they remained the rest of their lives. the 1870 census for Martin Township taken 28th July list these additional children: Martha age 18, born in Ohio, Emily age 15 born in Illinois, as were Amanda age 12, thoms age 9 and Louisa age 6. In the 1880 census they also listed a daughter Serepta age 12 that was not listed in the 1870 census for some reason. Jane died at home 25 November 1900 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 19 days. John W. died just three days after his wife, Jane, on 28 November 1900 at age 87 years, 10 months and 1 day. Both are buried in the Hardinville Cemetery. This cemetery where so many of this family are buried is located in Martin Township, section 34-T6-R13, just south of Hardinville, Crawford County, illinois. They were the parents of twelve children, six of whom survived them, according to their obituaries. Letters of administration on John W. Mulvane's estate were granted to his son John: "...said prsonal estate being estimated to be worth about six hundred dollars. That said deceased left surviving him no widow, and Hannah A. Coulter, John Mulvean, Martha J. Fritz, Amanda A. King, Thomas P. Mulvane, Melissa Mulvane, his children and James A. LaMaster, Emma Newlin, William LaMaster, Charles A. Fowler, Alta Mulvane, Harry Hockman and Pearl Hockman his grnadchildren and Harry Nelson and Hazel Nelson his great-grandchildren his only heirs at law." The handwriting is terrible on this instrument, and the names may not be deciphered correctly. After paying the debtors, the administration reports a deficiency of personal assets of $267.34 in the estate. REFERENCES: Obituaries of John W. History of Tuscarawas County, Ohio: Oxford Twp. (Newcomerstown) He was the son of John Mulvane, a native of Maryland, and of Scotch descent. He was married, August 14, 1834, to Mary Ross, a daughter of Rev. William Ross, Sr. and commenced business in Newcomerstown in about the year 1830, engaged in tanning, harness-making and other businesses and being very successful, accumulated some $150,000. He was a member, along with his wife and two daughters (Mrs. W.S. Dent and Mrs. O.C. Powleson), of the Methodist Protestant Church. In politics, he was a Whig, but afterward joined the Republican ranks. He died January 8, 1877, aged seventy-two years five months and seven days. He was the father of five boys and two girls, all married. He won the reputation of being a great hunter, as he chased the deer and captured the bear.

Kansas and Kansans by Wm. E. Connelley(1918), p. 1729: (David Mulvane) had but meager educational opportunities, but possessed natural abilities that led him aright in business, public life and neighborhood affairs without the aid of much book learning. He assisted in the building of the Ohio Canal, a wonderful engineering feat at that time, working on the section between Cleveland and Marietta. When the canal was completed he returned to Newcomerstown and for a time operated a ferry over the Tuscarawas River and in the winter time did odd jobs as a cobbler, a trade he had learned without any apprenticeship and a very important one at that time. Afterward he started a small store in the town and bought, sold and took in trade almost everything the country roundabout produced. The tobacco and wool that he bought he shipped by way of the Ohio Canal to Cleveland, thence via Erie Canal and Hudson River to New York and Baltimore. Twice a year he made a trip to the eastern markets, traveling on horseback over the National Turnpike as far as Pittsburgh, PA, thence by rail to the foot of the Allegheny Mountains. As the railroad did not climb the mountain passes and over the peaks, the passengers often made that part of their journey on foot. (Once across) the passengers dispatched on their way at a rate of speed that then seemed marvelous. Mr. Mulvane acquired a competency and was able to give his children many advantages.

He was married to Mary ROSS (daughter of Rev. William ROSS and Jane WHITAKER) on Aug 14 1834 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. Mary ROSS was born on Jul 8 1813 in Pennsylvania. She died on Dec 6 1899 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. Obituary: Mother Mulvane passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary J. Dent on Main St., Newcomerstown, Wednesday last at 1 o'clock p.m. More than half a centure earlier her husband had builded this same home, and under its hospitable roof her children had grown to man's and women's estate. From this home she had watched the increasing prosperity of her sons, and to the old home they returned to perform the last sacred rite for the mother who had done so much for them. In 1817 when whe was but 4 years of age she removed with her parents from near Philadelphia to Stone Creek. Pennsylvania and Ohio wer practically a wilderness then and the journey was made over the mountains, and through virgin forests in a one-horse cart. Some of the difficulties of the journey well be understood when it is known that there were 6 children in the family, the youngest being a babe of 6 weeks. Long before any churches had been ercted in this vicinity, her father was accustomed to preach to the settlers under the trees that grow on the State road just east of the C.O.D. Fair Grounds.

David MULVANE and Mary ROSS had the following children:

+172 i. John Ross MULVANE.

+173 ii. Joab Ragan MULVANE.

46. John McCune MULVANE was born in 1809 in Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. He died in 1851 in Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. He was buried in unmarked grave. John M., the second son of John and Mary (McCune) Mulvane was born in 1809 in Oxford Twonship, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He received his education in the old Pioneer log schoolhouse and worked on the homestead. For a time he worked on the construction of the Ohio Canal, as did his two borthers, and was appointed an overseer of the work. He went back to the home farm until his marriage on the 13th of November 1834. John married Sarah Ann Dean, the daughter of Col. John Dean, a native of Virginia. Sarah Ann was born in that state, 24 September 1815. Col. Dean bought a farm and moved to Ohio in 1818. In the new home he speedily had 400 acres under cultivation and erected a very comfortable farm dwelling, a large frame barn and other needed buildings. He lived there until his death in 1851. (Ltrs of Adm. granted Sept 1851) "Shortly after John M. married Sarah Ann he received of his father 160 acres and purchased an additional 100 acres, covered with heavy timber, situated in Coshocton County, Ohio on the Tuscarawas Rive. Here he proceeded with the arduous work of hewing from the domain of the forest a home for himself and his bride. It was the usual material and form and its furnishings comprised what was necessary for their use." HISTORY OF LANCASTER COUNTY, NEBRASKA, 1888 PAGES 374-6 John joined his brother, David, in seeral business deals in the transfer of land. Among these transactions was land owned by their late uncle William Mulvane, purchased from his heirs: on 29 June 1838 from Hannah Davis, and Rhoda Mulvane, 2/7 share for $456; on 17 October 1838 from Elizabeth Dean, 1/7 share for $228; on 18 August 1840 from Andrew Mulvane, 2/7 share for $255. The shares given to William (Jr) and Charity Mulvane apparently where sold by Andrew and John W. Mulvane. This was the 98 acres in the first quarter of T5 - R4 and the 55 acres in 11-5-4. The middle initial of John's name probably stood for McCune, after his mother's maiden name. In the 1840 Coshocton census, his name was written as John McCune Mullvain. John died probably in Oxford Township, Coshocton County, Ohio in 1851. At his death, Letters of Administration was granted to his brother-in-law, Phineas Inskeep, on 20 September 1851. Bond was set at $10.00 and he sureties were Junkin, James, John and William Mulvane. Samuel Forsythe was named guardian of the minor heirs, Oren and David. He was survived by his widow, Sarah Ann. For some reason, Phineas Inskeep did not serve as administrator as the Probate Court in Coshocton County, File Box 43, File #451, calls Junkin Mulvean the administrator.

He was married to Sarah Ann DEAN (daughter of John DEAN and Sarah Ann Campbell DULING) on Nov 13 1834 in Coshocton Co., Ohio. Sarah Ann DEAN was born on Dec 24 1814 in Virginia. She died in 1896 in Newman City, Douglas Co., Illinois.

On Tuesday morning May 12th, 1881, Mr. James Mulvane, one of our old and well known residents, died in this place. He was born near the grounds now occupied by the Central Ohio District Fair Association, in Coshocton County, one half mile west of Newcomerstown. He was in his 74th year at the time of his death. In 1830 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Clifton Cobb, with whom he reared nine children, she having died some three years since. His early life was devoted to agricultural pursuits; subsequently he went into the mercantile business, having sold his farm to his brother David Mulvane. For some years he has been in feeble health and not engaged in any permanent occupation. He was well known in this community, and an extended biographical sketch would be a work of supererogation. He was a plain, unassuming man, yet fearless and emphatic in the expression of his opinions. In common with frail humanity he had his faults. The redeeming traits of his character were not less conspicuous. He was generous to a fault, often incommoding himself to assist others. He met death without trepidation, nay courted it, and did not fear to meet the great I Am. His remains were interred in the Newcomerstown Cemetery on Friday the 12th. Rev. Thompson of the M. P. Church conducted the funeral services.

He was married to Elizabeth C. COBB (daughter of Townsend COBB) on Jul 20 1833 in Coshocton Co., Ohio. Elizabeth C. COBB was born on Jan 1 1814 in Green twp., Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. She died on Sep 5 1878 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. She was buried in East State St. Cemetery, Newcomerstown, Ohio. The Cobb family came to Newcomerstown from New Jersey with the Neighbor wagon train in July 1815.

James MULVANE and Elizabeth C. COBB had the following children:

185 i. Elizabeth Jane MULVANE was born on Aug 3 1835 in Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. She died on Jan 14 1919 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. She was buried on Jan 17 1919 in East State St. Cemetery, Newcomerstown, Ohio. Nurse at Gallipolis, Ohio during Civil War; she never married. Ohio Death Certificate # 7336 listed her as single and a music teacher. Elizabeth death certificate lists her mother as Eleanor Cobb birth place New Jersey. Obituary: She died Tuesday, Jan 14, at 11:45 p.m. at the home of her sister, Mrs. Sarah Sultzer of Canal St., Newcomerstown, after a few weeks' illness of heart trouble. She was born at the family home which stood along the Cadiz-Coshocton Road just south of the Hardy homestead, west of this city. She was married to John W MULVANE Sr (son of William MULVEAN and Hannah JOHNSON) on Jan 26 1841 in Coshocton Co., Ohio.

John's parentage is proved by a land deed dated 17 October 1838, in which he is named as one of the heirs of William Mulvane, and in another deed dated 15 December 1840, in which he sells his inherited share of this land to his cousins, John and David Mulvane of Newcomerstown, Ohio. The records of the Evans Creek Presbyterian church, Bakersville, Adams Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, shows that on 24 June 1833, the children of Mrs. Ann Jones were baptized. They were Jane, John, William and Jared Jones. Later , there is the notation, no date given, "Jane Jones, now Mulvane, dismissed." John W.'s uncle, Junkin Mulvane and his wife Monica, also attended this church, and their son, William Burr, was baptized there on 30 September 1838. John W. died just three days after his wife, Jane, on 28 Novmber 1900 at age 87 years, 10 months and 1 day. Both are buried in the Hardinville Cemetery. This cemeterym where so many of this family are buried is located in Martin Township, section 34-T6-R13, just south of Hardinville, Crawford County, illinois. They were the parents of twelve children, six of whom survived them, according to their obituaries. Letters of administration on John W. Mulvane's estate were granted to his son John: "...said personal estate being estimated to be worth about six hundred dollars. Fowler, Alta Mulvane, Harry Hockman and Pearl Hockman his grandchildren and Harry Nelson and Hazel Nelson his great-grandchildren his only heirs at law." The handwriting is terrible on this instrument, and the names may not be deciphered correctly. After paying the debtors, the administration reports a deficiency of personal assets of $267.34 in the estate. REFERENCES: Obituaries of John W.
