He was a was a school teacher. From "Colonial Families of the United States", page 101:

"A revolutionary solder, serving almost continuously under several enlistments from 1775 to 14th October 1783; afterwards receiving a pension in 1818 for his services. About 1800, he and his wife Mary joined the westward movement from Connecticut, stopping temporarily in Chenango County of New York and finally settling in Delaware County, Ohio, about 1802 or 1803 as it was admitted as a state and became there one of its very foremost and prominent pioneers. He acquired extensive land holdings in Delaware and Marion Counties.

From Jeanne Sutton citing "The Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly," Vol. 12, No.1, January 1909, pages 6 - 14:

"Israel Clark, son of Israel and Esther (Wilson) Clark, was born in Mansfield, Connecticut, March 7, 1757. He was reared in Mansfield, but destined to live in three states, many more towns, and have a most active and useful career. He married for his first wife, May 24, 1781, Mary Stedman, daughter of Thomas and Mehitable (Griffin) Stedman; she was born April 14, 1762, baptized June 23, 1776, and died February 11, 1787. It is stated that Israel Clark became a goldsmith and with his first wife, lived for a time at "Newberry," New York, but nothing has been found in any records as yet to show the truth of this statement and it is doubted that he left Connecticut before abut 1810. . . . If Israel, ever went to Newburgh, [where his brother Joseph Clark had located] his visit must have been a temporary one. In all probability, he remained in the vicinity of his father's family and numerous kinship about Ashford, Connecticut, where he married his second wife about 1787. It is interesting to note that an Amassa Clark of the same generation, had a son Harvey, who married into the same Stedman Family, and though the relationship does not appear, it discloses the origin of the name of one of Israel Clark's children.

"Israel Clark, married at Ashford, Connecticut, about the year 1787, for his second wife, Mary Kendall, daughter of Isaac Kendall (Isaac, Isaac, Samuel, Francis) and Mary Russell, of Ashford, Connecticut. Everything points to this marriage as having taken place at Ashford, for the Kendalls lived there at the time, and Israel Clark, wife and children became members or attendants of the First Congressional Church of Ashford and continued the relationship for several years about that time.

"As an early example of the force of character and patriotic courage, which took him westward and made him an "early Ohio pioneer" as well as a leader of men, a kindly neighbor and a useful citizen, Israel Clark, performed well his part in the war for American Independence. Probably, with his parents then in Mansfield, he enlisted from there, for the records at Washington, D.C., in the U. S. War Department show: "that Israel Clark, private, 7th Company, 5th Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Sherman, Revolutionary War, was enlisted April 1, 1782; that he was transferred in November, 1782, to the 3d Company, 1st Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Colonel Zebulon Butler, and that he was transferred in May or June, 1783, to the 2d Company of Colonel Herman Swift's Connecticut Regiment. His name is last borne on a muster roll dated October 14, 1783." This is further confirmed by record in "Connecticut Men in the Revolution" page 646. In the records of the U. S. Pension Bureau appears his application, under date of May 20, 1818, for a pension, under the Act of 1818. His residence stated there to be Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio, and that he was born March 9, 1757, and in similar papers, under date of 1820, he refers to his fourth wife, aged 40 years, and to the following children: Eli, aged 11 years, Alexander, aged 4 years, and Elizabeth, aged 14 months. The same military service as that given above appears in these records, except that his enlistment is given as in November, 1775, and an actual service of five years is disclosed, as a private in each the separate Companies of Captains John Hays and J. Hales, under Colonel Durkee and in the Company of Captain James Dana under Colonel Ely, as well as in the Companies of Captain Benton and Elias Stillwell, under Colonels Israel Sherman and Butler respectively. He is also called a Revolutionary soldier i the History of Marion, County.

"A short period before 1800, Israel Clark and wife, Mary Kendall, left Ashford, Connecticut, and joined the rapidly growing westward movement. An old lady still living at Willimantie, (Mrs. Amy Smith, with Mrs. T. F. Downing), who stated to the writer last summer that her parents were neighbors to Israel Clark and she has heard them tell about the journey of Israel Clark and family through the forests to the great unknown western territory. The trip was taken with the usual pioneer ox team an wagon, loaded with all their possessions, and consumed six weeks to the first stopping place.

"Whether the ultimate destination was then Ohio or not, the records of both Delaware County, Ohio and Chenango County, New York, the latter at Norwich, show ownership of land there by Israel Clark between 1798 and 1801, in all 346 acres. The first conveyance is by "Israel Clark and Mary his wife" in 1798, several following, and concluding by an alienation of the same premises in 1801 showing that the residence there was not satisfactory and the immigration westward was therefore renewed.

"Israel Clark and wife Mary, settled in Delaware County, Ohio as early as 1802 or 1803, just at the time of the admission of the State into the Union. This is shown by deeds of record there that in 1801 he was, "now of the Town of Norwich in the County of Chenanago in the State of New York," while in 1803, he conveys land in Delaware County, theretofore purchased of James Glover, also of Norwich. A power of attorney named Avery Power, a well known pioneer of the same neighborhood. Several conveyances from that date and subsequent show ownership of land and consequent residence there. A deed in 1808 is not signed by wife Mary and while not absolutely conclusive, it indicates her death about that date. In any event she was not living in 1810 or 1812. His daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Little, stated in 1907, that his wife, Mary Kendall Clark was buried in Liberty Township, Delaware County. Israel Clark married about 1815 for his third wife, Rhoda _____ (last name unknown) who must have died very suddenly, for he had no children by her and beyond the fact of the marriage and the appearance of her name in a land conveyance of that date, she completely disappeared from the family history. In 1809, he was living in Liberty Township, Delaware County, Ohio, and the records refer to Joseph Clark (his bother) then of New Burgh, New York, and also as of Danbury, Connecticut. The latter executes a power of attorney to Captain Leonard Monroe, whose family, with that of the Scribners and Clarks soon became closely related by several marriages. In 1808 and 1815 he conveyed land to his son Charles Clark and 1816 to one David Thomas, wherein his wife Margaret joins. This was his fourth wife, Margaret Dey, whom he had just married.

"About 1823, Israel Clark, disposed of his lands etc., and moved to Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio, where was to die and be buried. In the year 1821 he obtained a United States patent for the "east half of the northwest quarter of section twenty (20) in township six (6) of Range sixteen (16), containing eighty (80) acres," which was one of the old sheepskin issue and signed by President James Monroe. It was assigned to his son, Israel Clark, who in turn made provision by deed for "Israel Clark, Senior and Margaret Clark his wife, during their lives, etc." (These conveyances are recorded in Marion County Deed Records, Volume 2, pages 361 and 405). The cabin house of this early leader was built here and from its circle of influence radiated the homely virtues and sturdy attributes of the noble pioneer. Here, among his children some of whom were married and with their families lived in this vicinity and among kindly disposed neighbors who had come westward to found a new State and secure permanent homes, he finished out the round of his days. History of Marion County contains this statement, "Mr. Israel Clark, who settled in Richland Township (1823) among the first pioneers was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His son, Israel Clark, was one of the pioneer school teachers of Marion." The son died before the father, for in the records of the Probate Court of Marion County, Ohio, under dates of September and October, 1825, appear the settlement of the estate of "Israel Clark, Jr., late of Marion County, Ohio, Richland Township" and mention is made of Israel Clark, Senior, as being indebted to the estate. The names of Laura Clark, widow, and also of Samuel Scribner, appear.

"In 1827, Israel Clark, died leaving a will, now of record in Marion County, Ohio, which is so short that it is inserted here:

"July 17th, 1826.

In the name of God, Amen. I, Israel Clark, now lying on a sick bed, being in the full power of reason. I constitute and appoint William W. Smith and Margaret Clark my Executors of my Estate and furthermore do give and bequeath the remainder of my property to Margaret Clark and my two children George and Elizabeth C. Clark, after my debts is paid of both personally and real Estate to be divided equally between the three persons above named and this I declare to be my last will and testament. Givin under my hand at Richland Township, Marion County, and State of Ohio, and in presents of Amos Wilson and Adam Zehing.

Israel Clark.

"It names none of the children by former marriages, who were then either dead or settled in life for themselves. It is difficult to reconcile the statement of his pension application with the omission of the names Eli and Alexander from his will. The will was presented in court by Margaret Clark (widow). The inventory of his estate was made February 24, 1827. Some of the items appearing in a report of sale are so typical and indicative of pioneer life that they are repeated here, for their unusual interest.

"Like his father before him and true to the family training of his youth, Israel Clark was one of those exceptionally and sincerely pious churchmen, an honest man and a sturdy citizen. To this day, traditions of his worth and character are treasured among his descendants and those of his old pioneer neighbors. It is quite noteworthy that his daughter, Elizabeth (Clark) Little, should have been living in 1907, and have given her testimony to her honored father's life and Revolutionary service. Her affidavit appears in Volume X, page 186. [See below.] Israel Clark was buried in Smith's graveyard, Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio, and along side of Him lies Joseph Powell, a Revolutionary soldier and his mess-mate in one of the Campaigns. The Findlay Ohio Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are planning to have an appropriate monument erected to both of these heroes on the spot."

On this census her father was born in Canada and her mother born in Virginia. Other articles on her place her father's birthplace as Connecticut.

She died on Oct 26 1908 in Marion Co, OH.. From Jeanne Sutton, citing "The Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly", Vol 10, No. 2, April 1907, pages 186-187:

"A daughter of Israel Clark, born when he was 68 years of age, is still living in Marion County, Ohio, Mrs. Elizabeth Little. Mr. Monnette has in his possession an affidavit made by Mr. Little, which is as follows:

"State of Ohio, Marion County, SS.

Elizabeth Day (Clark) Little, being first duly sworn deposes and says that she was born in Delaware County, Ohio, March 16th, 1819, and will be eighty-eight years old the 16th day of this month; that she was married to John Little in Marion County, in 1843; that Mr. Little died in Hardin County, Ohio, February 2, 1891. The following are her children and the date of the birth of each: Mary Ellen McPherson, born March 21st, 1844, residing on North Leader Street, Marion, Ohio, with whom Mrs. Little is living; Thomas Judson, born May 19th, ___ , residing near Rushsylvania, Lima, Ohio; Charles Israel Little, born January 26, 1854, resides at Freeburg, Oswego County, Missouri, and Alice Margaret (Little) Mentzer, who was born October 14, 1857, and died March 3, 1900, and Martha Elizabeth Hogan, who was born February 25, 1860, and lives in Holden, Auglaize County, Ohio.

"Affiant further says that her father, Israel Clark, died February 5, 1827, at the age of seventy six years, in Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio, and his remains were buried in the Smith Graveyard in said township. Her father was born in Connecticut. The given name of his first wife was Mary. He married her in Connecticut and their children's names were Mary, Nancy and Charles. His second wife was Mary Kendall. He also married in Connecticut. The names of his children by his second wife were Chauncy, Harvey, Almira, Sophia, Roxy, Lucy and Israel. His third wife's name was Rhoda and they lived in Delaware County. No children were born as the result of this marriage. His fourth wife was Margaret Dey. They were married in Delaware County, Ohio, in 1818. Their children were George Washington and Elizabeth Dey. All of the children of the said Israel Clark are now dead except the affiant, who is the only surviving child of said Israel Clark, deceased.

"Margaret Dey, the mother of the affiant, was married three times. Her first husband's name was Alexander Stewart, who came from Virginia to Gallipolis, Ohio about 1811. After the death of her first husband she married Moses Brown. They moved to Radnor, Ohio, and after Mr. Brown's death she married Israel Clark.

"Affiant says that she was about eight years old when her father died. He was a soldier in the American Revolution, entering service at the age of nineteen years and remained in the service until the close of the war. She has often heard him relate incidents of the war and has heard him relate that he was acquainted with George Washington and had had the pleasure and distinction of having met him. Affiant has read the Life of Washington and finds in it may incidents what were related to her by her father concerning the Revolutionary campaigns. Joseph Powell who lived near them in Richland Township, this county, frequently talked to affiant of her father and told her after her father's death that he and her father were mess mates during the Revolution. Powell died in 1844 at the age of one hundred and one years, and is buried in the same cemetery and only a few feet from where Israel Clark is buried.

"Israel Clark moved from Connecticut to Pennsylvania, where he remained about six months, and then moved to Delaware County, but affiant does not know the dates of the changes. He, with his family, moved to Marion County in February, 1821.

"Said Israel Clark had four sisters, named Patience, Prudence, Temperance and Damarish, Affiant does not think he had any brothers.

"Her mother survived her father about nine years. Her father, mother and brother, Israel, are all buried in the Smith Cemetery, Richland Township, Marion County, Ohio.

"Affiant further says that her father was a regular pensioner of the United States Government.

"He was raised a Presbyterian, but later favored the Methodist denomination, although he was never a member of any congregation while a resident of Marion County, Ohio.

107. NANCY ANN CLARK2 was born on Jun 17 1834 in Marion Co, OH..132 Notes from the papers of Hope Dorland say she was born in Rome, OH. I find no evidence to support that.

She appeared on the census in 1850 in Marion, Marion Co, OH..133 She is still living at the home of her parents.

She appeared on the census in 1860 in URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL.134 She immigrated about 1860 to Woodland, Yolo Co, CA.. There are many, many family "yarns" about the various migrations of John Switzer Cunningham and his various families. The one I remember clearly being told as a child is as follows:

"JSC came to California for the health of his wife, Nancy Clark, as he had been told the climate would be better for her. This first trip was supposedly across the Isthmus of Panama and then to California by ship. When I was a little girl, I was shown a small stuffed elephant made of a now-grimy cotton fabric with small ivory tusks. I was told that it was carried by Eddy Clark Cunningham as they came on this trip.

"After they came to California (this would presumably be the stay in Woodland) it was obvious Nancy was still dying and she "wanted to go home to die". They returned to the midwest, presumably Marion, Ohio, and she died there about 1865-1867.

"JSC remarried and brought the family to California a second time, this trip being by train (the second trip of the transcontinental railroad after the Golden Spike)

Thomas J. Carter, Jr. thinks he remembers that they came to California by "the first train from Chicago to Sacramento."

She resided WOODLAND, YOLO CO, CA between 1863 and 1868. As noted in the section on John Switzer Cunningham, some of the property owned in and around Woodland was held either in the name of Nancy Ann or Mary Ann (Cunningham) Fisher, John's daughter by his first marriage. There may be other deeds in addition to these:

She died on Mar 7 1868 in Marion, Marion Co, OH..135 She was ill with tuberculosis.

In July, 1979, Thomas J. Carter, Jr. wrote to his daughter, Marilyn (Carter) Pukelis:

"Last night I was looking through a notebook that Ted had been keeping and found that it was a kind of copybook which Nancy Clark had used . . . .the things she wrote in this book were done in the 1850s. The earliest entry is dated 1852 and the latest is 1856. She didn't date all of the entries. She used this book, at least in part, as a rough copy of things she must have copied in their final form, such as letters, essays and poems. One letter is to Dr. J. S. Cunningham in Urbana. "The desire to thank you for the very excellent book is the apology I offer for writing a note to an entire stranger of whom I know nothing save that he is an acquaintance of my brother's. I have read the book with the depest interest and shall not lay it aside until I have given it a second perusal. Accept a thousand thanks for it from Nannie Clark." This note is not dated. Also not dated is a letter to the editor of a magazine "Ladies Repository" which is signed Nannie Cunningham. Later she refers to the town of Woodland, where my great-grandfather is supposed to have been the postmaster, etc."

This notebook is now (January 1998) in the possession of Carolyn (Carter) Johnson in Palo Alto, CA

She was married to JOHN SWITZER CUNNINGHAM on May 28 1857 in Marion, Marion Co, OH..136 They were married by the Rev. J. A. Hellam.

JOHN SWITZER CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Nov 8 1817 in IRELAND or it could have been any number of other places!. Sources vary widely on his place of birth. Early census records show "Ireland". After he came to California, they show "Rhode Island", as does the Great Register of 1864. One of his children even showed "Mass" as his father's place of birth. Another says he was born on board the ship and yet another says he was born "six weeks after landing". Ireland seems to be the best bet. His daughter, Edith, wrote "they arrived here about the time of his birth. His father was Scotch and his mother was Irish." (See narrative following for complete text of her letter.)

Thomas J. Carter, Jr. remembers a rather fanciful "shipwreck story" wherein John Switzer was shipwrecked, cast ashore (presumably on the East Coast) and was dying of dehydration. So he bit into his own arm and drank his blood. All this being an explanation of a scar that JSC had on his arm! Whether this incident was supposed to have happened at the time of the original immigration, or at some later date, remains unclear.

He was It should be noted that a "Dr. Jesse Scott Cunningham" resided in Sacramento between 1850 and 1880. Additionally, it appears there was a "Dr. J. S. Cunningham" in Ohio between 1840 and 1860. Unless John Switzer Cunningham was leading a double life (a serious possibility that should not be ruled out!) these are different parties.

He resided URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL between 1858 and 1862.137 (On the 1860 census, they have a domestic, Jane E. Rouals, age 21, born PA living with them.) He was a was a "Silversmith" on the Census in 1860 in URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL.138 .

He resided WOODLAND CA, SACRAMENTO CO, CA between 1863 and 1868.139 See the Deeds to various properties in and around Woodland, CA, as shown in the Yolo County Archives, Woodland, CA, as follows:

Note that these transactions are for various pieces of property and there very well may be others. It is noteworthy that title to many of them seem to be in either Mary Ann's or Nancy Ann's name.

He was a was a "Druggist" in 1865 in Woodland, Yolo Co, CA..140 He was a was named "Postmaster" on Oct 26 1866 in Woodland, Yolo Co, CA..141 The "brick building" (according to the Woodland newspaper) housed the drugstore and post office both.

From Thos J. Carter Jr: "The most sensational story of JSC is about his trying to evict an undesirable from the store. The customer didn't want to leave and JSC decided to throw him out. A fight ensued which migrated to the wooden sidwalk outside the store and during the battle the customer had a knife in his belt. Eventually the knife cut through the sheath and accidentally disembowelled the customer, who died." This killling was presented in the family lore as an "accident". As of 1997, TJC had not been able to locate any newspaper accounts of the incident.

He was signed the Great Register, Yolo County, California in 1867.142 From the California State Library, California Infofile, MicroFiche 0121:

He was went back to Ohio, and then returned to California a second time after his marriage to Mary in 1869. He was bought the Castoville property on Oct 27 1869. which was located on Merritt St, just west of the corner of Merritt and Preston. (See Deed Book "I", page 524)

Then, on 11 March 1873, he signed the property over to his wife Mary, who didn't record the deed until 19 May 1874. Perhaps he signed it over to her before he went to Europe, but if so, why did she wait to record it until almost 18 months later? And then it was recorded at the request of "Walter St. John". (See Deed Book "Q", page 6) Now who the heck was he ???

Winnie Cunningham Young wrote of this time: "After the death of his second wife. . .he married Mary E. Capen in Meadville, Penn. . . . His four little children were staying with the Clarks, their mother's people at the time. He and his new wife came to Illinois for the children, Ida 10, Edd 8, Ione 6 and Ernest 4 years of age. They prepared to board the first overland train for California but were urged to wait for the second trip, fearing the road bed might sink in places.

"They came on the second trip of the Overland to San Francisco. They then went to visit his oldest daughter, Mary C. Fisher in Woodland. Then the family came to Santa Cruz and stayed at a hotel on Front Street, where they were literally eaten alive by fleas, while looking for a place to locate. Monterey was chosen and became their new home.

"They later settled in Castro Ville and still later in Santa Ana."

Of the train trip, Thos J. Carter Jr., writes: "Someone had warned them that the roadbed, which had just been finished, was so unstable that accidents were likely to happen. They therefore booked on the second train. Each family carried its own provisions and the train would stop while the passengers got off the train, built a fire to cook the food and when the passengers had finished the meal theya ll reboarded and the train went on its merry way."

Efforts to locate passenger lists for this second overland railroad crossing have, as of May 1998 been unsuccessful. See JSC individual file for the email from the Sacramento Railroad Museum.

Later Winnie wrote: "In Castroville at one time lived only three white families - ours - the Dr. Cunninghams - the Pardoes and the Burlands. Mary Baldwin - teacher - taughter a private school for the children of these families." (The Cunninghams bought the Castroville lot from John Burland)

Family stories had always told of them living "in Monterey". Thomas J. Carter, Jr. remembers Eddy Clark as an old man being driven around Monterey and thinking he recognized "their" house.

I remember being told they lived in "the first brick house in Monterey" and there was something about a well in the yard adjacent to the house. Marilyn (Carter) Pukelis, on the other hand, remembers a story about them living on the waterfront and lowering their valuables, tied up in a bedsheet, into the ocean on a rope "when the pirates came".

And just to add variation, Mary Halsel (Cunningham) Jones says she believes John Switzer Cunningham's jewelry store was stocked with items "the boys" had taken off "the pirate ship" after swimming out to it at night.! Were there "pirates" in Monterey around 1870?

He appeared on the census in 1870 in CASTROVILLE, MONTEREY CO, CA.143

Note that John Switzer Cunningham is also shown resident in Gilroy, Santa Clara County for this same Census. It would appear that he was enumerated "at the store" in Gilroy, (along with Henry Warner, age 21, born Ohio), and then again at home in Castroville. Additional census information on him is as follows: Watchmaker, age 52, born Rhode Island, Value of Real Estate is $1500, Personal Property worth $4000. Father and mother both foreign born. He lists himself as eligible to vote.

He appeared on the census in 1870 in Gilroy, Santa Clara Co, CA.. Why did he show up on the Census owning real estate when there is no deed record for him (at least, as of Feb 1998, I've not found any). He notoriously seems to have put property in other people's names.

He was was part-owner of a Gilroy jewelry store, along with H. C. Warner. on May 14 1870. This whole Gilroy episode is a mystery. The ONLY time the name of JSC is publically associated with the store is the opening announcement and the Personal Property Tax Assessment. Here's the chronology:

14 May 1870 - Announcement in "Gilroy Advocate" - "CUNNINGHAM & WARNER are opening a fine stock of Watches, Clocks and Jewelry which they are opening, [sic] very low to suit the times. They repair every kind of Watches, Clocks and jewelry and warrant their work to give satisfaction. They have a reputation for dealing. Call and see them in the new building of Oldham, opposite Wangewnheim, Loewis store, corner of Martin and Monterey."

8 Oct 1870 - "DR" Cunningham "of Castroville" gives temperance lecture to Gilroy I.O.G.T. No mention of jewelry store in newspaper's write-up.

10 Dec 1870 - Announcement in "Gilroy Advocate" - announces the opening of H. C. Warner Jewelry Store. Wording of announcement is identical to that used by Cunningham & Warner. Thereafter, H. C. Warner advertisements appear regularly in the Advocate. Location is given as "Next door to Fred Briggs Drugstore" which was located on the corner of Monterey and Martin.

27 Apr 1871 - Philip Phillips gives much publicized concert in Gilroy. No mention in any article of the relationship to JSC.

30 Apr 1871 - Assessment of Property, Gilroy, page 9; J. S. Cunningham, Stock in Trade, $500

1871/1872 San Jose Business Directory, Gilroy, H. C. Warner, jeweler, corner Martin & Monterey

30 Apr 1873 - page 378, H. C. Warner, Stock in Jewlery Business, $800

30 Apr 1874 - page 388, H. C. Warner, Stock in Trade, $1500

30 Apr 1875 - page 395, H. C. Warner, Lot at NW Corner Forest St & Old Gilroy; Goods, wares, mdse including jewelry & watch, $2500 (by this time, Warner has sold the 6th & Monterey location to Jas. Zuck. The family of Jas Zuck were the primary founders of Gilroy and had spent time in Marion County, OH)

Also interesting is that in addition to the Zuck family connection to Marion Co, OH, various other family names located in Gilroy at this time were: Dorland, Widney and a Mrs. L. Perrin, seamstress.

He was sailed to Europe on the S. S. Virginia in 1873. His great-great-granddaughter, Marilyn Carter Pukelis, has in her possession (1998) a copy of a poster advertising "A Temperance Lecture"on behalf of the I.O.G.T. by "Dr. Cunningham", to be delivered 23 June at Islington, near Birmingham, England. The poster was printed in Birmingham by C. N. Wright (Top Floor), 39 & 40 High Street. That same year, 1873, the International Order of Good Templars (I.O.G.T.) held an International Conference in London and it can be assumed that his trip was for the purpose of attending same.

The S.S.Virginia belonged to the British "State Line"and sailed between Glascow, Larne (Ireland) and New York. It may be recognized in pictures as it has a straight stem, one funnel painted buff with a red band and a narrow black top. It had three masts and only sailed under this name between 6 June 1873 and December 1873, when it was re-named "State of Virginia". (This information is generously given via Internet by Mr. E. "Ted" Finch of England <efinch@paston.co.uk>) I have (1998) an original sepia "postcard" picture and information on the ship, with the notation "The boat that Dr. Cunningham went to Europe on 1873."The card notes "Austin Baldwin & Co, Agents, 74 Broadway, New York" and Lewis T. Merrow & Co, Managers, 65 Great Clyde Street, Glasgow".

Further information obtained via Internet from Michael Palmer <mpalmer@netcom.com> states that John Switzer Cunningham could NOT have sailed TO Europe on the S.S. Virginia and arrived there in time to give a lecture in Birmingham on June 23, as the ship did not leave New York City bound for Glasgow and Liverpool (her maiden voyage) until June 25, 1873. Additionally, he is not shown on the passenger list for that sailing which was printed in the New York Times 27 June, 1873.

By this time, John Switzer had been giving "Temperance Lectures" for about thirty years. He apparently was lecturing on behalf of the Sons of Temperance as early as 1843 in Zanesville, Ohio, and subsequently lectured extensively for the I.O.G.T. His "resume" cites: 27 Dec 1843, lecture in Johnstown PA per "Cambria Gazette", 3 Jan 1844 Hollidaysburg, PA newpaper mentions his temperance lecture and says he has "left for the East", 17 May 1844, Niagara Falls, NY, Temperance lecture, and Dr. J. S. Cunningham is a member in good standing of the Zanesville [OH] Olive Branch, Division No 26, of the Sons of Temperance (signed by H. Blandy).

The "Gilroy Advocate" (CA) carries an announcement and then subsequent review of lectures given on behalf of the Gilroy I.O.G.T. on 8 Oct and 15 Oct 1870, referring to him as "DR. Cunningham of Castroville" Note that the review specifically says he has been paid for giving the lecture.

He immigrated before May 1875 to SANTA ANA, LOS ANGELES/ORANGE CO, CA. I have a reasonably clear memory of Grandpa Cunningham (Eddy Clark) telling me that when he was a boy of about 8 to 10 years of age, the family moved from Monterey to Santa Ana. His father (John Switzer) had gone on ahead and as "the man of the family", G'pa Cunningham rode a horse in front of the wagon which carried the rest of the family southward. He said he was scared the whole time, as there was a famous Mexican bandit (Joaquin Murietta?) roaming the hills and he was afraid the bandit would come after them because the horse was valuable.

My father, Thos J. Carter, remembers the story this way: "As a youth, he (ECC) was given the responsibility of driving a herd of cattle by himself from one place to another, probably in the area of Monterey and Santa Clara counties. Suddenly he realized that he was being approached by a band of bandits. He was scared that the cattle he was entrusted with were going to be stolen from him and he might be killed. They approached him and learned his destination, but did not attempt to steal any of his herd. ECC said that encounter led one of the bandits to meet ECC's sister and the bandit became quite attentive to her. ECC's father took a very dim view of his daughter associating with a bandit. What was done about breaking up this relationship I was never told - only there were some anxious times around the house for a while."

He was , along with Mary, sold the Castroville property on May 27 1875.144 The deed is signed and notarized in Los Angeles Co, and BOTH Mary and JSC have signed it. I would assume that even though he put the property in her name, she couldn't sell it without him?

Also interesting are these two things: 1) the land is sold to a consortium of Companies in San Francisco (Targeon & Co, and H. Moleneue and S. B. Dinkelfiel & Co), and (2) that the deed was recorded at the request of Wells Fargo & Co. Don't know what all this means, and more research is needed.

He died on May 5 1877 in SANTA ANA, LOS ANGELES/ORANGE CO, CA. He signed a will in LOS ANGELES CO, CA.145 LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT, Probate Register, Case 916, Book 2

as cited in EARLY CALIFORNIA WILLS, Vol 1 & 2 with Index 1850-1890, Los Angeles County, Daughters of the American Revolution California Genealogical Comm., found at Sutro Library, San Francisco, CA, Apr 1997:

In an undated letter from his daughter Edith ("Winnie") Cunningham Young, probably written to Mary Halsel (Cunningham) Jones:

"The Cunninghams had their origin in Ayershire, Scotland just south of Glasgow. Remains of their stone castle still remain. Four sides of stone with a circular staircase enclosed. A hall seemingly ran the entire width of the house. Two posts outside may have been from a draw bridge.

"Members went from there to Colorarno Island [sic] before coming to Massachusetts in 1740. The Robert Cunninghams may have been the first.

"All I know of the John Switzer Cunninghams (my father) is that they arrived here about the time of his birth which, according to the Family Bible, was Mar 8, 1817. His father was Scotch, his mother Irish.

"There was another son and at least two daughters in the family. The son doubtless did not survive the Civil War. One Daughter, Arabella, married William Dodge of Willimantic, Connecticut. They had six daughters. Three died in infancy, but Anna, Josie and Hannah lived.

"Anna married a "Hall", had one child and died. The last I heard, that father reared the girl well and she was graduating from high school.

"Hannah Dodge never married. Was a nurse. She died in California

"Another of father's sisters married a "Murray". There were two children I know of. Nellie never married. Her sister, Edna, married Gardner A. B. Spencer of Alameda. Had two children, Marjory and Kenneth [sic-note she may have confused Edna Murray with Edna Fisher]

"Dad remained a widower eleven years, then married Nannie Clark of Illinois. They had: Ida Marion, Eddy Clarke [sic], Ione May, Ernest Carroll.

"After Nannie's death, he married Mary E. Capen and their children were: Abbie Arabella, John Alfred, and me.

"Father died May 5, 1877, when I was two years old.

"This is all I know of the family.

"The Cunningham Bible, Ida wanted so mother gave it to her. Maybe one of her granddaughters has it."

132. "AUNT IDA" IDA MARION CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Mar 11 1858 in URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL.136 Her marriage license, however, states that she was born in Ohio. She appeared on the census in 1860 in URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL.161 She appeared on the census in 1870 in CASTROVILLE, MONTEREY CO, CA.162 She is shown on this Census as 12 years of age. She resided in 1876 in SANTA ANA, LOS ANGELES/ORANGE CO, CA. Mary Halsel Cunningham Jones writes that "She had two daughters, one of whom lived in New Jersey that Papa visited on his one excursion to New York City and environs. I do remember that off-spring of Aunt Ida were burned in a fire from an over-turned oil lamp and her hair turned white overnight."

She appeared on the census in 1880 in GUNNISON, GUNNISON CO, CO.163 From this Census, and assuming this is "Aunt Ida", she seems to have been moving pretty fast. At age 18, she was married in Santa Ana to J. C. Edwards in 1876 and by June, 1880, she's in Gunnison, Colorado married to J. F. Spencer.

She was lived in San Diego, according to notes found in the papers of Melba Dorland..

She was married to ROBERT HINKLEY.167 possibly in Santa Ana, CA according to notes in the papers of Hope Dorland.

133. EDDY CLARK CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Sep 22 1859 in URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL. This is according to the Cunningham Family Bible, location in 1997 not known.

He appeared on the census in 1860 in URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL.168 He resided California at age four in 1863. His obituary in the Exeter Paper, December 1948, states that he came to California at age four. If true, the whole family must have been in Woodland by 1863. The Deed books at Yolo County Archives, Woodland, CA, show the first land transfer from Freeman to John Switzer Cunningham in 1863, so their arrival seems to be confirmed.

He appeared on the census in 1870 in CASTROVILLE, MONTEREY CO, CA.169 From Thos J. Carter, Jr: "One day we were driving around in Monterey with Aunt charley May in the car, just to look at the town where grandfather lived as a child. As we passed the restored early-day adobe buildings which were used as government buildings, grandfather exclaimed that one looked to him like the building they had lived in at one time.

"When he lived in Castroville, he told me, he and his brother Ernest 'could lick any three boys in town'. One of their sporting activities was to harass the schoolteacher with the object of making life so miserable that the teacher would leave. This made attending school impossible until another teacher could be found who wa willing to brace the attack of the local boys and they had another long stretch without having to go to school!"

He appeared on the census in 1880 in CARPENTERIA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA.170 This Census shows his name as "Edward", age 21 years.

Note there was another "Edward Cunningham" living in Santa Barbara Co concurrent with Eddy Clark Cunningham. The "other" Edward was from Massachusetts and owned most of Montecito. He's definately not "our" Eddy.

He Voted in the 81st Enumeration District, 4th Supervisor's District in 1880 in CARPENTERIA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA.171 "Cyrilla" is also shown on the voting list - although I don't know why as she would not have been able to vote. Maybe she was able to sneak one in??

He Voted 15 Aug, Voting No. 531, Reg. No. 184 in 1882 in CARPENTERIA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA.172 Eddy Clark Cunningham is shown as age 22, born Illinois, occupation is farmer.

He immigrated before 1885. down to the Long Beach/Santa Ana area.

From Thos J. Carter Jr.,:Someone in the family told me that grandfather owned at about that time the corner of what is now 4th Street and American Avenue, worth a fortune today. He tried to raise spinach and other vegetables there but the soil was not very good for truck farming as there was a smelly substance that made the soil unsuitable. So he sold the Long Beach property and moved to Sulphur Springs where he had the same problem with the soil that had some sticky black substance in it. My Aunt Charley May was born there and the place was renamed Santa Fe Springs which, at one time, along with Long Beach, were the most productive oil producing locations in the Los Angeles Area. Even in those days people said "If I'd only held on to that property . . . . !"

He was a was a carpenter in 1885. From Thos J. Carter, Jr.,: "He was a man of many talents, which was necessary for a man who had no specific trade. When the first hotel in Long Beach was being built he was hired as a carpenter to help on the construction. I don't remember what the wage was, but he said that the finish carpenters were fined 50 cents for each hammer mark on the finish carpentry. This apparently was a large percentage of the day's wage."

He was a was a "well driller" in 1901. The 1901 Orange County Directory shows: "Developing water a specialty; several years in Orange County; Good References." Address is: 906 Sycamore Street, Santa Ana, Ca.

He apparently placed the same advertisement in the sections for Buena Park, Delphi (2 miles south of Santa Ana) and El Modena (3 miles east of Orange)

From Thos J. Carter, Jr : "He worked all over Southern California, then later up into the San Joaquin Valley, and claimed to have drilled the first well on the Irvine property in Orange County as well as the first well on the King C. Gillette Ranch. Gillette, whose fortune came from Gillette razors, owned large holdings in Tulare County as well as other areas of the Valley.

But the attemnpt to make a living well drilling and/or farming became nearly impossible because so many wells were using the subterranean water that the cost of pumping went up as the water table in Tulare County went down. The whole Cunningham/Halsel connection had a terribly difficult time makeing a living. Years later, the irrigation water became available."

He resided in Santa Ana in 1905. The 1905 Santa Ana City Directory shows him as living at 636 Birch Street. The household is composed of: Mr. and Mrs. E. C. and S. J., Nannie, Alice (student), Charles M. (teacher), Ernest (Mrs. Hazel) bookkeeper. The "Charles M." is presumably Aunt Charlie May.

He was had several mishaps while working as a well driller before 1919. From Thos J. Carter, Jr.,: "One of the mishaps while working as a well driller wasfor him to break his neck - literally. He fell off the top of a well house and landed on his head. Apparently he did not lose consciousness and instructed his family on what to do for him. A rope was thrown over a roof joist in the barn and a loop was tied in the end, Grandfather's head was inserted in the loop which encircled his neck and the other end of the rope was tied to a stud. Tension was put on the rope so that grandfather's toes were barely touching the ground. He was literally hanged! When the family finally found a doctor, the examination revealed two of the neck vertabrae had been shattered. The rope placed grandfather in traction where he stayed until the doctor said it was no longer necessary and the traction saved his spinal cord from being severed. As a child, I could feel the splintered bones in his neck and they remained that way as he lived.

"I recall that once he was living with us when grandfather had a fall resulting in two or three broken ribs. My mother started to call the doctor, but again he had his own remedy. He told her to fold a bed sheet the long way until it was about 15 inches wide. Then he held one end of the folded sheet on his chest and turned until the sheet was wound tightly around him. The end was secured with safety pins and he explained to me that healing of the broken ribs must take place naturally as no doctor could repair them. Pain upon breathing was severe but had to be endured. Grandfather was one tough cookie!"

He resided P. O. Box 204, LINCOLN, CA in Oct 1919. according to one document related to his daughter, Nannie Cassandra (Cunningham) Carter. Her son, Thomas J. Carter, Jr., remembers "when we came back from Korea, G'ma (Sarilda Halsel Cunningham) had just died. Grandpa had a house in Lincoln and was working at the Gladding-McBean plant. We might have gone to live with him for a while, or more likely we stayed at Exeter."

Both Grace (Halsel) Fairley and Shelly Ann (Obarr) Foster have stated that by the time of Sarilda's last illness, Eddy and she had long been "separated" and that Eddy was living in Lincoln at the time of her death.

From Thos J. Carter, Jr: "Grandfather had almost no formal education, yet he was well educated by his reading books and learning on his own. After he retired he read a great deal on many different subjects. Once when I felt I could impress him with my knowlege, I gave him my opinion on criminology since I had just finished a course in that subject at the Univ. of So. Cal. He listened very attentively to my discourse. Then he said to me 'And how do you reconcile that opinion with the position given by [some other important sociologist] in his recent book?' I learned that I'd better not be so pompous in my exhibition of knowlege!"

He died on Dec 19 1948 in Exeter, Tulare Co, CA.. At the time of his death, he was living with his daughters, Eddy Alice (Aunt Allie) and Charley May in the house in Exeter. He was buried on Dec 21 1948 in LINDSAY CEMETERY (OLIVE VIEW) LINDSAY, CA. According to the Exeter newspaper: "Final rites were conducted by Rev. Oscar Gibson of the Exeter Methodist Church, Rev. Edward Cunningham of the Congregational Church of Santa Cruz, a grandson and Rev. Thomas Carter of Riverbank, a grandson. Funeral arrangements were made by the Webb funeral parlor of Lindsay." But note that Rev. Thomas Carter was his son-in-law, husband of Nannie Cunningham Carter.

Thomas J. Carter, Jr., states: "The planing mill in the photos was a saw mill that Grandpa said he and Uncle Ernest ran up at Sugarpine. I remember going up to Mariposa, near there, and we had a cousin that had been a County Clerk there and I saw a bunch of documents with his signature on them."

He was married to SARILDA JANE PRISCILLA HALSEL on Feb 9 1879 in SANTA ANA, LOS ANGELES/ORANGE CO, CA.173 Eddy Clark Cunningham and Sarilda Jane Priscilla Halsel were married 9 Feb 1879, Santa Ana, CA by Thomas R. Custis, Minister, P.C. (Presbyterian Church?) recorded in Los Angeles County Court House Records Book 6, page 24.

It seems to be agreed by just about all the family that they lived apart for much of their lives and by the time of Sarilda's death they had been "separated" for many years. The reasons for this seem to depend on whether the story-teller liked Sarilda or Eddy better.

SARILDA JANE PRISCILLA HALSEL2 was born on Jul 25 1858 in Bear River area, Humboldt Co, CA.. At the time of her birth, the family was living on the O'Dell/Cassino ranch. This property is located on Bear River, about two miles inland from the Pacific. At one time, there was a post office in the area named "Gas Jet" for the natural gas fissure which stills burns there.

She appeared on the census in 1870 in SANTA BARBARA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA.174 On this Census, she is shown as "Clarinda J. Halsel".

She appeared on the census in 1880 in CARPENTERIA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA.175 This Census shows her name as "Cyrilla", age 20 years.

She was buried on Apr 22 1924 in LINDSAY CEMETERY (OLIVE VIEW) LINDSAY, CA. She died APR 21-MAY 1924 in Exeter, Tulare Co, CA.. Thomas J. Carter, Jr., in Jan 1997 states: "She had a really unpleasant disposition. When she was dying, she went to live with Aunt Allie and it must have been a real act of love for Allie to take her in and put up with her. Her disposition was probably why Grandpa [Eddy Clark Cunningham] spent so much time away from home."

He is not sure what her cause of death may have been. He believes he was told that she died of "shingles that had gone all the way around her body". There apparently are/were some other rumored possible causes of death which he appeared not to want to discuss.

In Sarilda's defense, however, both Shelley Ann Obarr Foster and Grace Halsel Fairley remember her very fondly. Grace, in fact, stated flatly that she did not like Uncle Eddy and thought a lot of "Aunt Sarildy". Shelly Ann Foster remembers "Serildy" as "a tall, pretty lady with lots of beautiful wavy hair. [Photos certainly confirm this] She had shingles at the time she was living with Aunt Allie. She was a very nice lady, but quite particular. One time when we visited, we had to change the sheets as she thought they had been put on 'wrong-side-too"

All the photos I've seen seem to show a pleasant looking woman, most often surrounded by flowers. Another of the Halsel women who liked flowers!

EDDY CLARK CUNNINGHAM and SARILDA JANE PRISCILLA HALSEL had the following children:

+142 i. NANNIE CASSANDRA CUNNINGHAM.

+143 ii. EDDY ALICE CUNNINGHAM.

+144 iii. JAMES "BUD" ERNEST CUNNINGHAM.

+145 iv. CHARLIE-MAY CUNNINGHAM.

146 v. LILA BELLE CUNNINGHAM2 was born in Dec 1887 in LONG BEACH, LOS ANGELES CO, CA. She died in 1888 in LONG BEACH, LOS ANGELES CO, CA ?. She was buried in 1888 in Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, Orange Co, CA..

+147 vi. JESSE CLARK CUNNINGHAM.

134. IONE MAY 'ONIE" CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Aug 1 1862 in URBANA, CHAMPAIGN CO, IL. Note that information from the papers of Hope Dorland states her birthday was 1 May 1862, citing the Cunningham family Bible.

Her obituary in the Santa Cruz paper states: "Her family lived next door to Abraham Lincoln's family. Lincoln was one of the early callers at her house after her birth and she gained the distinction of being one of the children who sat on the President's lap."

While making a swell story, this is probably not true. She was born in 1862 and I think Lincoln did not return to Illinois alive after his election as President in 1860.

She resided CALIFORNIA in 1867.176 "They lived in Castroville, Monterey and Santa Ana before moving to Soquel" according to her obituary. This is a bit of an understatement!

She appeared on the census in 1870 in CASTROVILLE, MONTEREY CO, CA.177 She appeared on the census in 1880 in SOQUEL, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA.178 On this Census, she is age 17 and is enumerated with W. R. and Mary (Capen Cunningham) Wilson

She was educated in 1884 in SAN JOSE, SANTA CLARA CO, CA. As quoted by "The Senior Journal, San Jose, California, December 18, 1884":

Miss Ione Cunningham:

"You may sometime have occasion to refuse the heart and fortune of some aspiring young man. When such a time occurs, give him this little ham, that he may, at least, have the satisfaction of saying, "I own a cunning ham".

She resided about 1900 in Modesto, Stanislaus Co, CA.. She retired in 1932 in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. She resided at 146 MORRISSEY BLVD which she and Fred had built in 1952 in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA.176 .

She died on Feb 17 1952 in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. She was buried on Feb 21 1952 in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. "Services will be conducted at White's Chapel, .. . . . .with Rev. Ed Cunningham officiating. Private internment in Santa Cruz crematory."

She was a was a teacher in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. She was elected as the first woman on the County Board of Education in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. .

She was married to WILLIAM "FRED" FREDRICK WYMAN on Dec 19 1889 in SOQUEL, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. WILLIAM "FRED" FREDRICK WYMAN2 died on Mar 14 1944 in SOQUEL, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. The Estate Tax Notice reads: "Estate, William Frederick Wyman, deceased. Laura Wyman Maddock, niece, $100 on $4000. Ruth Wyman Arndt, niece, $50 on $3000. the wife, no tax, Ione May Wyman, $50, 738.10." He resided the Morrissey Blvd house which he and Ione built in SOQUEL, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. He was had his photo taken by McKean & Ort in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. .

IONE MAY 'ONIE" CUNNINGHAM and WILLIAM "FRED" FREDRICK WYMAN had the following children:

148 i. MELBA IONE WYMAN2 was born on Apr 3 1897 in SOQUEL, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. She died on Aug 27 1897 in SOQUEL, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. "Died: WYMAN - At the residence of W. R. Wilson, Soquel, Aug 27th 1897, of brain fever, Melba Ione, only child of W. F. and Ione Wyman, aged four months and twenty-four day. Funeral at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wyman, Soquel, on Sunday at 2 P. M.. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend."

135. "UNCLE ERNEST" ERNEST CARROLL\CARL CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Sep 24 1865 in Woodland, Yolo Co, CA..136 He appeared on the census in 1870 in CASTROVILLE, MONTEREY CO, CA.179 His birthplace is shown as California. He appeared on the census in 1880 in SOQUEL, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA.180 His age is 14 years and he is enumeration with the family of W. R. Wilson and Mary (Capen Cunningham) Wilson.

He resided in Alaska during the Alaskan Gold Rush according to family stories and his obituary in 1894/95.181 A Census record shows an "Ernest Cunningham" as "enumerated with Steamship Robert Dollar, Seattle, Wash., Relationship to above: Passenger." This record was photocopied by Thomas J. Carter Jr, on the assumption this was Uncle Ernest, but it now seems unlikely (although still possible) in view of his marriage date.

His daughter, Melba, states "He spent time in Alaska Gold Rush before 1900 when my parents were married."

He resided between 1900 and 1906 in Dinuba, Tulare Co, CA.. In a letter shortly before her death in 1997, his daughter Melba states: "They lived in Dinuba, Tulare County, for many years where the three children were born." He was a was the Saw Mill Manager and possibly owner between 1900 and 1915 in SHAFER LAKE, CA. Melba Cunningham Dorland states: My Dad would run the saw mill during the summer months and was a carpenter - building houses - the rest of the time. The saw mill was in an area called "Pine Ridge" - out of Fresno (I think)".

Stan Emerson says the saw mill was at Safer Lake. Mary Halsel Cunningham Jones says Hume Lake. Thomas J. Carter, Jr. says Sugar Pine, Mariposa Co. Pending further confirmation, Stan wins !

In 1997 the old saw mill property at Sugar Pine in Mariposa Co. had been converted to a Christian Youth Camp. The caretaker of the Camp said there were only two sawmills of that type in California.

He was a was a raisin rancher in 1915 in Dinuba, Tulare Co, CA.. Per Melba Cunningham Dorland: ". . .about 1915, he bought the raisin ranch in Dinuba and still did some carpenter work as time would allow."

He resided in Dinuba until about 1928 when they moved to Glendale and then to San Diego in 1932. He died on May 2 1948 in SAN DIEGO, CA. At the time of his death, they lived at 4583 Idaho Street in San Diego. He was buried after May 2 1948 in SAN DIEGO, CA. However, information from the papers of Hope Dorland says he is buried in "Reedley".

Thomas J. Carter, in 1997, said he was taken to the Mariposa Co. courthouse as a child and shown documents signed by a county recorder that had a double last name "such as Van Dyke". The man was a gambler and had two boys who also like to gamble. The father told the two boys to either give up their day job and become professional gamblers and "be good at it or else quit gambling". As of 1998, the connection - if any - between the father and the Cunningham family is unknown.

Apparently the trip to Mariposa had something to do with going to the sawmill. My thought is that the "double last name" may have been "Van Norman".

He was married to "LOTTIE" CHARLOTTE RHODA MILLSAP on Apr 15 1900 in NEAR TRAVER, TULARE CO, CA. A photocopy of their marriage license shows them married by W. J. Shelton "near Traver, Tulare County", and that witnesses were E. C. Archer and Dr. J. H Errett. A note at the bottom states "Grooms Father: State RI, mother of Ohio. Bride's parents of MO."

"LOTTIE" CHARLOTTE RHODA MILLSAP2 was born on Aug 8 1880 in MONTGOMERY, LINCOLN CO, MO. Information in the papers of Hope Dorland says "Aunt Lottie" said she was born in Truxton, Miss.

She immigrated in 1885 to Traver, Tulare Co, CA from Truxton, MO. She resided in 1952 in SAN DIEGO, CA. She was suffered a stroke and was under nursing care at Valley Manor in 1955 in CONCORD, CA. She died on Nov 10 1958 in CONCORD, CA.132 Information in the papers of Hope Dorland says she and Ernest were buried in "Reedley".

"UNCLE ERNEST" ERNEST CARROLL\CARL CUNNINGHAM and "LOTTIE" CHARLOTTE RHODA MILLSAP had the following children:

+149 i. HAROLD ERNEST CUNNINGHAM.

+150 ii. IONE MARGARET CUNNINGHAM.

154 i. 6 CHILDREN-ALL MUSICIANS AND JEHOVAHS WITNESSES FRYHOFER2 was born in IN THE EAST.

142. NANNIE CASSANDRA CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Jul 28 1880 in CARPENTERIA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA. The "birth certificate" held by her son, Thomas J. Carter, Jr., is actually a "delayed" birth certificate or "Attestation" executed by Wilma Bernice Duddleston, Notary Public, Stanislaus Co., in Riverbank, CA. At the time of her birth, Carpenteria was in Ventura County, but the area was later annexed to Santa Barbara County. As of August 1997, no evidence of a contemporaneous birth record has been found.

She resided in 1909 in TULARE, TULARE CO, CA. In a letter to Hulda Jones, 1401 Bush St, Santa Ana, CA, dated 2 Sep 1909 and postmarked Tulare, CA,.. " Charley May left us Monday morning and it seems so lonesome without her. I hope that it was so the boys could get to San Francisco for the same train she had to take. Saturday I received word that my vacation is to be extended to the first of October and Miss Kenney could not go now, so if the boys did not get there she had to go alone. I wish that we could all have gone together.

"Alice becomes a "full fledged" school teacher on Monday so Mama and I will be left alone. Mama is becoming accustomed to this not climate up here now..........We want you to come right away and stay as long as you will. Mama says to tell your mother to come too........."

So it appears she and Sarilda have only recently moved to Tulare and she is on leave from her missionary duties.

She resided RIVERBANK, CA in 1952 in RIVERBANK, CA. She resided 154 VERMONT AVE DINUBA in May 1957 in Dinuba, Tulare Co, CA.. She died on Jan 1 1976 in Fresno, Fresno Co, CA.. Date of death may possibly be 7 Jan 1976.

She was married to THOMAS JEFFERSON SR CARTER on May 22 1912 in SPARTANBURG, SPARTANBURG CO, SC. The date of their marriage varies, depending on who you ask. This is probably correct.

THOMAS JEFFERSON SR CARTER2 was born on May 22 1884 in UNION COUNTY, SC. He retired in Jun 1949. He died on Apr 12 1957 in Dinuba, Tulare Co, CA.. He was a PROFESSOR/FOUNDER/PRINCIPAL? in SPARTANBURG, SPARTANBURG CO, SC. TEXTILE INDUSTRIES INSTITUTE IN SPARTANBURG - LATER BECAME SPARTANBURG JR. COLLEGE

He was was a member of the Methodist Church South as a child in Mar 1917. He states in 1998: "Both Dorothy and I were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Both of us joined as children. My membership was in the Methodist Episcopal Church South until 1936 when that church unified with the Methodist Episcopal Church to become the United Methodist Church. Both of us were members of that church until about 1981 when we joined the First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto. I transferred my membership back to the United Methodist Church in about 1990 where it remains. Dorothy remains a member of the Presbyterian Church."

He was a was working as a bank teller at the time he met his wife in 1938. .

He was educated at LaVerne College, graduating with a BA in Education in 1941. He had attended Los Angeles Jr. College between 1933 and 1934, La Verne in 1934 through 1936, and then again in 1940 and 1941.

He and Dorothy remained in Tokyo after his retirement in 1975, returning to live on Willmar Drive in Palo Alto in 1979. After holding the world's largest garage sale, they sold the Willmar Drive house and became residents of Channing House, a retirement community in downtown Palo Alto.

143. EDDY ALICE CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Dec 26 1881 in CARPENTERIA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA. She resided in 1952 in Exeter, Tulare Co, CA.. She died on Oct 19 1968 in SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. She was buried on Oct 28 1968 in LINDSAY CEMETERY (OLIVE VIEW) LINDSAY, CA. .

She was a was a school teacher in the California schools until her retirement.. .

Carolyn (Carter) Johnson: "I have no idea why this woman wa christened "Eddy Alice". That is her legal name and not a nickname. We always called her "Aunt Allie" and members of her own generation also called her "Allie". I've heard she was named for her father, as they had expected she would be a boy. But my grandmother was the first-born in the family and they didn't give her the name. Nor did they name their next child, a male, after his father. So it's a mystery.

Aunt Allie was "the caretaker" in her generation. At various times, she is reputed to have cared for her mother (Sarilda Jane Pirscilla Halsel Cunningham - a difficult woman who had shingles and must have been in great pain), Hiram Halsel (with Parkingson's), James Halsel (with fact cancer) and Aunt Winnie (in Santa Cruz). All this in addition to caring for her father in his old age.

I believe she also supported Aunt Charlie-May (and possibly Uncle Jess as well) financially. She either loaned or gave my grandparents the money to buy the Dinuba house and possibly Riverbank as well. She may also have loaned my parents the money to buy/build the house in Upland, although I'm not sure about that.

I remember her only as an older woman who seemed to me then to be quite stern. But my father, who lived with her when he was a teenager, says "she was quite remarkable and lots of fun".

It's my understanding my father is writing an extensive biographical sketch of her and that will be added to this database when it is completed.

She was married to DID NOT MARRY.

144. JAMES "BUD" ERNEST CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Sep 6 1882/83 in CARPENTERIA, SANTA BARBARA CO, CA.

He was a was a bookkeeper for the Golden West Celery Co at the time of his marriage in 1905 in SMELTZER, CA. He was a Cattleman, Rancher and farmer about 1950. He resided in 1952 in RIVERBANK, CA.

He died on Oct 28 1961 in Fresno, Fresno Co, CA.. He was buried on Oct 31 1961 in LAKEWOOD MEMORIAL CEMETERY, MODESTO, CA.

He was married to HAZEL LLOYD DAVIS on Aug 22 1905 in SANTA ANA, LOS ANGELES/ORANGE CO, CA. HAZEL LLOYD DAVIS2 was born on Oct 3 1887. Although notes made by Grace Fairley show her birthdate as 3 Oct 1886.

She died on Jan 9 1941. She was buried after Jan 9 1941 in LINDSAY CEMETERY (OLIVE VIEW) LINDSAY, CA. Although this is very complicated, the relationship between Ed, Lloyd and Hazel is such that when chidlren, they would be teased about being older than their aunts.

The Davis family lived in Hollister and owned the Chevrolet Garage there.

JAMES "BUD" ERNEST CUNNINGHAM and HAZEL LLOYD DAVIS had the following children:

156 i. "LLOYD" ERNEST LLOYD CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Jul 30 1906 in ORANGE CO, CA. .

He was educated at the College of Medical Evangelists before 1938 in LOMA LINDA, CA. He was a physician in 1938. After completing his internship, Lloyd was coimmissioned as a medical missionary by the Mission Board of the Church of the Breathern and assigned to Ping Ting, Shansi Province, China. Lloyd and Ellen sailed for china in 1938, but because of the political turmoil they were forced to leave China after three years of work, going to Baguio, Philippines, for further language study. While there, they were interned by the Japanese for over three years. Toward the end of the war, they were transferred to Santa Tomas in Manila and were liberated from there.

After the was, they returned to China for a two-year period but again were forced to leave and for the next ten years their work was in Western India where Lloyd was in charge of medical work centered at the city of Bulsar in Gujarat State.

They returned to the United States in 1959 and up to the time of his death Lloyd practiced medicine in the Fresno area.

As a child, I remember being told that when they were in the internment camps, Lloyd as the only doctor, told the other prisoners to eat all the bugs and insects they could find in order to add protein to their diets. As a result, I was told, the camp had the lowest death rate of any other prison camps.

As explanation for Lloyd's weight, I was told that when he was released from the prison camp he vowed "never to go hungry again." And I remember a story about his having shot a "man-eating tiger".

He resided 198 W LARSON AVE in 1972 in Fresno, Fresno Co, CA.. He died in Jan 1976 in Fresno, Fresno Co, CA..

157 ii. "ED" EDDY DAVIS CUNNINGHAM2 was born on May 25 1908.

158 iii. ALICE GERALDINE CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Oct 24 1910. She died on Aug 3 1913. She was buried in LINDSAY CEMETERY (OLIVE VIEW) LINDSAY, CA.

159 iv. IDA BETH "KIKE" CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Nov 13 1915 in LINDSAY, TULARE CO, CA.183 She was buried in 1987 in LINDSAY CEMETERY (OLIVE VIEW) LINDSAY, CA. She died on Feb 27 1987 in LINDSAY, TULARE CO, CA.183 She was educated at LaVerne College, LaVerne, CA and at San Francisco State.. Ida Beth was a school teacher and homemaker.

He was married to RUTH OLIVE DICKERSON on Dec 28 1942. RUTH OLIVE DICKERSON2 was born on Jun 10 1894 in DENVER, CO. She was a was a milliner before 1942. She resided late in life at Marysville, CA., possibly with her daughter..

145. CHARLIE-MAY CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Nov 15 1885 in SANTA FE SPRINGS, LOS ANGELES CO, CA. Although I've also seen her birthplace listed as "Gospel Swamp".

She was was a member of the Methodist Church South in 1896 in SANTA ANA, LOS ANGELES/ORANGE CO, CA.184 She was educated at the Los Angeles State Normal School (later Los Angeles State Univ.) in 1905. She also attended Unniv. of California in Spring 1923 and Southern Methodist University (one term in 1916 and one year 1923-1924) apparently earning an A. B. degree.

She was educated at Scarritt Bible and Training School, starting in 1911. However, in a letter dated 25 March 1924 written to Esther Case, she says she went to Scarrett in 1916.

She was a was a missionary at the COLEGIO INGLES on Oct 2 1912 in SAN LUIS POTOSI, MEXICO. San Luis Potosi may be near Los Mochis, which is where I always heard she was "stationed".

She was a was a missionary at the Lydia Patterson Institute in 1914 in EL PASO, TEXAS. Apparently she taught at the Lydia Patterson Institute "as no one could return to Mexico". She returned "home" (presumably Santa Ana) frequently during this time due to bouts of "Mexican Amoeba" and taught there "to keep up with the continual medical expenses." It was probably during this time that she "taught three years in an ungraded school and acted as Principal one year in a two-teacher school". He note to that effect, however, does not indicate the years.

She was a was a missionary at the Colegio McDonald between 1923 and 1925 in DURANGO, MEXICO. She resided POB 123, EXETER, CA on Mar 25 1924 in Exeter, Tulare Co, CA.. She retired in 1925 in MEXICO. She states in her application for some sort of pension from the Methodist Church that at this time she was "forced to leave Mexico again and at the Mayo Brothers Clinic was informed that I could never return", apparently due to amoebic dysentary.

She was a was a teacher in the California Public Schools between 1925 and 1944. She took early retirement in 1944 as she was plagued with recurrent dysentary from her Mexican days.

She died on Aug 28 1965 in CAPITOLA, SANTA CRUZ CO, CA. The following letter was found in the papers of Winnie Cunningham Young, having been returned to Frances Young Hobbs by Olive Cunningham: 146 Morrissey, July 16 1965,

"Dear Harold & Olive,

" A few lines to tell you about Charley May.

"A few weeks ago she was taken to the hospital with a severe attack of heart trouble.

"When she left the hospital, the report was that there was very little that could be done toward a cure.

"A week ago yesterday the Jesse's were here from Modesto. Water was forming in C. Mays lungs - Yesterday Hesse and family and Ed were here and C.M. was taken to the hospital - very ill.

"The report this morning was that she had a hard night and was very low.

"No visitors I believe.

"This afternoons report os that she called Allie on the phone. Which proved a blessing to Allie. She has settled down for the afternoon to a good rest.

[Here follows a few paragraphs unrelated to CM]

"P.S. Have not mailed this, hoping to report Charley Mays improvement, July 31. She is very low this morning, after a hard night. She is still breathing Oxygen.

Hastily, /s/ Winnie"

She was buried on Aug 31 1965 in LINDSAY CEMETERY (OLIVE VIEW) LINDSAY, CA. She was apparently went to New York, possibly with Uncle Jess, sometime in the 1950s. Jimmy Yoder in 1997 says he has a snapshot of her boarding a plane for this trip. Most of the information on Aunt Charley May is from her various applications to the Methodist Board of Missions. The application papers are in the possession of Marilyn (Carter) Pukelis in 1997. Her life would be a lot of fun to explore further, as I remember her as an adventursome kind of old lady who may have been a bit of a "flake". For instance, there is a recurrent family story that she was recalled from her missionary duties in Mexico because she fell in love with "one of Pancho Villa's men" and not because of the dysentary. It's probably not true, but makes a terrific story!

147. JESSE CLARK CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Sep 30 1890 in SANTA ANA, LOS ANGELES/ORANGE CO, CA. He resided in South Carolina on Oct 18 1919 in GREENVILLE, GREENVILLE CO, SC. He west to South Carolina to live with Thos. J. Carter, Sr. and family, probably while attending Wofford College.

He died on Jan 7 1971 in Modesto, Stanislaus Co, CA.. He was buried on Jan 11 1971 in LAKEWOOD MEMORIAL CEMETERY, MODESTO, CA. He was a was a Minister in the Methodist Church, according to his daughter.. He was a was also involved in some way with the sales of Cemetery lots, possibly in Lindsay?.

149. HAROLD ERNEST CUNNINGHAM2 was born on Sep 5 1901 in Dinuba, Tulare Co, CA.. according to his sister Melba Cunningham Dorland.

He died in 1973. He was buried in AT SEA. He was a PROFESSOR - SAN FRANCISCO CITY COLLEGE. He resided SAN FRANCISCO, CA. He was apparently had a boat, and Jim Hobbs remembers Ed taking him out from San Francisco.. Jim thinks the boat was Ed's, but Thomas J. Carter Jr. is sure Ed never owned a boat. More likely, it was Harold's and Ed borrowed it. According to Thomas J. Carter, Jr. Harold "was good buddies with Ralph Emerson."

He was married to OLIVE ELIZABETH MORRIS on Jun 15 1928. OLIVE ELIZABETH MORRIS2 was born on Oct 13 1907 in MEXICO, MISSOURI. She was buried in Oct 1996 in AT SEA.
